Splitting 1 belt into 2 belts and balanced

Is there a way to split 1 belt into 2 belts and have it balanced and not have the materials only travelling on the outermost edges of the 2 belts?

Place a belt balancer after the splitter. https://wiki.factorio.com/Transport_belts#Balancing_the_belts

Obviously, that doesn't address the reason you get the "unzipping" - both output belts will be half empty because you only have one input belt being split up into two.

Thanks for the replies, I just realised I was using a 4-belt balancer instead of a single belt balancer

the wiki needs updating. the one belt balancer everyone seems to use should be replaced by this one.

There's nothing "improved" about this version.

the standard balancer with a splitter connecting to both sides of a belt will only pull material from one side when one sied of the exit is being used. the improved splitter feeds from both halfs.

Yes, it feeds from both halves... but it is an awful lot of expense to go through to "fix" a mistake further down the line -- if you split off your main bus properly, you don't need such contraptions.

hacked splitters mod will do what you want; there may be a performance hit to your UPS, depends on your hardware.
