Train loading/unloading
Hey Is there a more efficient way of getting this train loaded? Not very versed in trains http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1171862308

Well, for starters you could use 3 splitters on each side to evenly divide the incoming ore among the 4 cars. As it is now, your train will be sitting there waiting until the first car fills, then all the chests for the first car fill, then the second car will start filling, and so on. Using splitters to divide the ore evenly will make each car load at the same speed.

For a more advanced way of doing it, which is still more efficient, check out this video:

This is a bit harder to set up, but it's a good way to start learning how combinators and circuit wires work. It's not necessary if you don't feel up to the task, the splitter method will work fine.

EDIT:

Here's a better video:

Actually I can't do multiplayer. Sorry. Wish I could.

All good and may I ask why you can't? Just curious.

My internet is satellite. Latency is through the roof (uh, sorry, bad pun). I can stream high-def video all day, but in a MP game lag is sometimes over 1 second.

So, technically I CAN play MP but any decent server admin would boot me immediately.

I personally wouldn't mind

Yeah, for the small amount of ore you are producing (2 not nearly fully compressed red belts), a 4-wagon train is a bit overkill, but your best current choice should be to use splitters to ensure that ore is evenly distributed among the wagons.

In the end, about 4 stack inserters are fast enough to empty out a full blue belt of materials (and unloading, but inserter movement will keep that from working perfectly too), so if possible you should greatly increase the amount of iron to make sure you are "efficiently" loading the train.

i'll try that out MisterSpock

it loads in 6,something seconds a whole waggon.
SmashingSnow Oct 17, 2017 @ 2:27pm
alright awesome and does it unload at the same speed?

Loading unloading depends on the buffer = chests.

4 stackinserter are almost a belt

here is a balanced station:

Sadly for me I have not used combinators with wires.

I usually use this for loading a train. It can run into issues loading quickly (4 stack inserters strip the belt, so the last 2 on each side typically don't get much), and you're still limited by 4 inserters on each side even if you only need to load a single wagon.

Since then, I have changed over to a bot-based loading scheme, which is the absolute fastest you can load a train (6 stack inserters per side constantly moving a full stack of materials, no wasted milliseconds waiting for the belt to move items under the inserters). It's good for additional storage too, as adding passive provider chests and requester chests triples the typical storage on the train station. And even if only one wagon-load is requested, all belts will be constantly loading, so everything is at work. The only downside is, well, cost. 1000-2000, a few dozen roboports, and a ton of power aren't cheap for people that aren't in mega bases.

Unloading? This works well enough. It can be two belts per wagon, and they are almost guaranteed to be fully compressed. No need for the more expensive splitters and underground belts (except for belt balancers, but you don't NEED to balance if you don't want to).
