For a more advanced way of doing it, which is still more efficient, check out this video:

This is a bit harder to set up, but it's a good way to start learning how combinators and circuit wires work. It's not necessary if you don't feel up to the task, the splitter method will work fine.
EDIT:
Here's a better video:

Actually I can't do multiplayer. Sorry. Wish I could.
So, technically I CAN play MP but any decent server admin would boot me immediately.
In the end, about 4 stack inserters are fast enough to empty out a full blue belt of materials (and unloading, but inserter movement will keep that from working perfectly too), so if possible you should greatly increase the amount of iron to make sure you are "efficiently" loading the train.
4 stackinserter are almost a belt
here is a balanced station:

Since then, I have changed over to a bot-based loading scheme, which is the absolute fastest you can load a train (6 stack inserters per side constantly moving a full stack of materials, no wasted milliseconds waiting for the belt to move items under the inserters). It's good for additional storage too, as adding passive provider chests and requester chests triples the typical storage on the train station. And even if only one wagon-load is requested, all belts will be constantly loading, so everything is at work. The only downside is, well, cost. 1000-2000, a few dozen roboports, and a ton of power aren't cheap for people that aren't in mega bases.

Unloading? This works well enough. It can be two belts per wagon, and they are almost guaranteed to be fully compressed. No need for the more expensive splitters and underground belts (except for belt balancers, but you don't NEED to balance if you don't want to).
