Shooting direction

I am totally new to this, so my excuses. But I read that space bar was to shoot... except that when I used that it fired away from the biters. Do I actually have to somehow turn around to be able to shoot them? If so how? and how do I know which way I am facing?

That depends on which weapon you are using - smg/pistol automatically shoot the nearest target with space (c to force attack a non-hostile object) but the rest (shotgun, cannon, flamethrower) shoot where the mouse is pointing which means that you do need to point the mouse cursor at the enemy.

To add to what Alex said... the SMG will target via the mouse cursor too, allowing you to prioritize enemies if you desire to do so.

easiest way with smg is just hold space and and move mouse over the enemies, smg just fire when target something

the shotgun and flamethrower fires if space is pressed, also without a target

OK, so in fact, for anything except the pistol, you do need to point the cursor as well as pressing the space bar and pressing S or w to run away,
