How to shoot down asteroids on Cerys?

I cannot figure out how to get carbon for lubricant on Cerys.
How do I deal explosive damage to destroy asteroids?

I figured it out but won't delete the post - maybe somebody else is having the problem.

The shotgun does not work.

The submachine gun and turrets do.
