Are client-side mods a thing for this game?
Title.

It means if I have them and a friend doesn't, we can still play together without him needing to install. A common example would be HUD mods.
Aha, I see. Thanks for elaboration.

In that case, I'm almost 100% certain that the answer is no. All players in a multiplayer game need to have the same set of mods. All mods, including interface mods, are implemented as Lua scripts, and there doesn't seem to be much of a system<>interface distinction in the API.

mods arent that hard to install, as long as you get it from the ingame mod portal, your friends can easily install the same ones.

It's probably not about difficulty of installation, but about wanting to have some interface or cosmetic mods that other players maybe do not want or need.

i think it is not even possible when a mod has the same version and name but different content.

it would be semi-possible if you use the same mod with your friend, but that mod has a way for ingame runtime configuration (don´t ask me how, but it is possible)
