Where to download mods?
Ingame method

The easiest way to download and install mods is via the ingame method.

You click on "Mods" in the menu

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899979631

which will lead you to a mod manager and an option to install and update mods.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899979650

If you then click "install mods" you will reach the mod-browser, where you can find all the currently available mods.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899979664

Manual method:

Then there is the manual solution, where you navigate to the Mods website[mods.factorio.com] and download mods manually.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=899984383

If you run into any error you might need to remove all the mods manually to be able to start the game up again.

Here is how you do it.

Disc location:

The mods are located here:

Windows:

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods\

OR

"%appdata%\factorio\mods"

OR

Press "Windows-Key" + "R" and enter " %appdata%\factorio\mods" into the "Run" window.

Linux:

~/.factorio/mods

Mac OS X:

~/Library/Application Support/factorio/mods

Interesting, I had similar problems, you have a login for steam, but then you need another for factorio.com and another for the mods website. Still haven't been able to get any mods yet.

But yes the game is great.
does using mods disable steam achievement ?
love it, nothing more nestalgic than some old school modding, installing back the winzip and dragging them files, mmm i can smell the pizza rolls
mine comes up with login stuff only i have never log into this game ever as i got it via steam can anyone help me pls

Create a Factorio account and connect it to your Steam account:
  • Make an account on factorio.com if you don't have one yet
  • On factorio.com go to your profile page (click on your name on the top right)
  • Scroll down to connect your Steam account with your Factorio account
  • You can now use the multiplayer and mod portal features
Thank you, that finally got that sorted....Now I just have to find the right location on a Windows 10 pc? Any ideas anyone?
If it's the mod folder:
%appdata%/factorio/mods
Just like it's written on the first post.
But what it does not say on the first post is that on a fresh install there is NO %appdata%/factorio/mods folder.... that is only created AFTER you have added your first mod, installed it etc. Only then can you go into the Windows directory and find that folder.

Well, you can always launch the game and download any random mod from the ingame menu, it should create the folder properly.

%appdata% will take you to the current user's "Roaming" folder in the hidden "AppData" folder.

If you launched the game just once, the Factorio folder should be there, as it is where the config is stored, as well as the save data.

Exactly what I did.... a simple enough extra step.... but a hell of a pain if you don't know about it. And my heart goes out to those who are less computer literate.
Is there a way to get mods for Factorio WITHOUT going to the Factorio mod page? I really don't want to make an account just to download a mod or two...
Not realy, both the ingame tool and the website require a factorio account.

On the plus side, you also need that account for multiplayer depending on the server's settings, so if you plan on jumping into multiplayer, it's not a bad idea to have that acount anyway.
Sorry, the issue remains. Why do we have to create yet another identity and manage it (and unrelated unwanted content in other channels) just to use the ingame mod download.

More overhead for the users. Quadrillion of places to register if you have many games ... quite annoying.
You are right, it was much better when the game was not on steam, you only needed a factorio account, now you also need a steam account.
(I obviously don't mean it, it's convenient to have the game on steam too, but you really got it backward as it was already accessible quite a while before it even considered steam).
I was merely pointing out that I need more and more identities and passwords to manage, something which I really dislike spending time on. Perhaps I'm all alone regarding that ...

Please raise a hand if you preffer to have more accounts to create and keep in sync with your emails & password managers, as well as cross device password management.
