Havnet bought game yet, but is there a penalty to dying in this game?

Kind of. The stuff in your inventory will stay where you died and there is a short timer to get them back. You can also just load a save from before you died.

I always reload when I die (which isn't often because I mostly play on peaceful), so I didn't even know that there was a timer until you mentioned it. Interesting! Anyways, the wiki says that it's 15 minutes, plenty of time to get your stuff back.

It's a factory game though. All your equipment and armour is very easily replaced if you have a half-decent factory. At the very least you would be mass-producing the ingredients for anything you might drop anyway. The only real penalty for death is inconvenience or the enteral shame you will feel because you got run over by a train. You get a free trip to your spawn point and lose a few moments grabbing stuff from chests or hand-crafting some armour/weapon.

I didn't say never, I said not often ;) Sure I got run over at some point earlier in my Factorio sessions, but I learned to be extra careful around train tracks since then. Hasn't happened in a long time now.

I actually started using walls and gates wired to signals just to keep from kissing trains. That, and it forces me to use concrete paths.

I call poppysock; I still got killed by a train.....

Comically it's always a fun moment when you dodge 2 trains by the skin of your teeth then think you're safe only to be run over 2 seconds later.... on your way back xD

You can also edit settings to make enemies less harsh has a lot of customization for world gen.

i usually get hit when i'm safely out of the way, but move "just in case"

Is this surprising? I play almost exclusively rail worlds and the only time I've ever been killed by a train was when I did it on purpose to get the achievement.
