Will there be a Factorio 2?
a new version that fixes some fundamental problems like the very limited amount of tiles Factorio supports for example

At the moment there are no indication of Factorio 2 being a thing. However there is an expansion coming. Whether or not it has the improvements you want is still completely unknown at this point.

They could easily fix that but it would interfere with optimizations and we may not like it. If they still blogged this would be an interesting topic.

I do not want Factorio 2. I have heard devs say 2D was a mistake and they should have done "2D in 3D" like Starcraft II. But the conveyor belts would never have looked as good that way, and zoom-out would never have scaled as well, the UI would be weaker, etc. I think we are very lucky to have this game the way it is and anything different will be worse.

It's like asking if there will be 15th of October in 2157. Maybe? Kinda likely, though it's rather far away to even wonder about it? There is expansion in the works and considering WUBE's approach it's unlikely they are working on a sequel alongside it. So... after the expansion drops, gets old and if it succeeds, we could approach a slightly more knowledgeable... maybe.

Also, tile limit being a "fundamental" problem? aside from a good pun, how? You cannot even run into it unless you use mods, and even then you need to push it. How is that a fundamental problem?

Any other just as fundamental problems? Or is this topic just a very weird way to complain about a very specific modding limitation?

i haven't read all the discussions here over the years, but i've read a fair few of them and i've never heard of a tile limit, and had to google what it was. obviously a sample size of one is meaningless, but i wouldn't think its a fundamental problem.

From their post in 2021 where the dev team explains why they work on an expansion and not e.g. on Factorio 2:

Factorio 2

The problem with a sequel is that it is expected to be very different in many ways, and technically a different game (Starcraft 1→2). Sequels that mainly just extend the content, but reuse most of the stuff from the previous installment were common in oldschool games (Baldur's gate 1→2, Fallout 1→2, Doom 1→2), but I'm afraid that this is not the expectation today.

The point is, that making a 'New Factorio' is exact opposite of what we want to do. Finally, the base game is in a state that we are happy with, things like Graphics, tutorials, engine, multiplayer etc. Specifically we spent most of the effort in the last year on finalising the GUI, and the last thing we want to do is to throw it all away for the sake of changing stuff.

The upside of them working on an expansion is that they've said that whatever core engine updates they need to make to support it will also be applied to the base game.

So if the expansion requires them to update the engine to allow more tile types... that update will very likely go into the 1.2.0 version of Factorio.
