Why is there no "briefing" for solar system edge?
Done all the planets and research and the only indication of what to do next is the tool tip for solar system edge?

Why is the path to the end game not laid out more clearly?

Seems unnecessarily vague...

There's nothing to brief you on. Go there and you win, as described in the text blurb you skipped past when you started the game.
would have been nice you you marked this as spoiler

That text blurb is a bit vague, with no mention of the edge at all.

Welcome to Factorio: Space Age Freeplay. Your task is to dispatch an interstellar space platform. You will need to research advanced technologies in order to unlock the rocket silo and discover other planets. Start small, work your way up with automation, construct a reliable base of operations and reach for the stars. Protect yourself from the native species, as they might no appreciate your presence.

Not spoiler tagged since it's the first thing seen in every game started.

Yet, for the OP, there is a briefing for the solar system edge. It's in the Factoriopedia right between Aquilo and Shattered planet.

The end! Or rather, a new beginning. Building a space platform capable of surviving this far beyond the relative safety of the crash landing site proves your capability to travel anywhere else in the great depths of interstellar space beyond. For a space platform to survive this trip, it would need to be particularly self-sufficient and have the tools needed to turn the large, dangerous asteroids along the way into usable resources.
Particularly notice the first, short, two-word sentence: "The end!"

I decided to head out and completed the game yesterday. Now I wonder if I can make it back.

My ship is still there but I got the win screen so i am done.

Took a 15k stack of iron, 6k of explosives and 5k of copper in the hold to get there... so...
I made it back the 100,000 km to Aquilo... at 10km/hr average speed. I did take 300K damage on the trip, had zero railgun ammo left and maybe 30 Rockets. I was deleting parts off the back of the platform to repair the front.

Making it back in one piece, even if it's a slightly smaller piece, is quite the accomplishment.
Congrats.

Cmon guys, the information is right there in the description. A platform needs to be self sufficient.

Inching along at 10km/s while tearing apart bits of the ship to make repairs, or bringing stacks of iron and copper of all things.... is not self sufficient

Everything you need is available from the asteroids you destroy, in fact there's way more than you could possibly use if your goal is getting to the edge

A fun story of limping to the finish line is fun to a point, but the whole point of space platform logistics is self sufficiency, you make the stuff you need on the platform itself that's why they exist

I did not find balancing my space platform fun or interesting.

The fact that you constantly run out of different asteroids depending on where you are in the solar system means balancing is a nightmare.

Also the lack of chests is just a stupid annoyance. I get not having bots, but I can't stack a pile of iron into a box?

Asteroids already take up a full storage space.

And where I do have my ONLY storage box I can't access it except from the central area?

A different challenge is one thing, but between space exploration and space age, spacex ship design was way more fun, intuitive and realistic.

Like in what universe does a space ship run into 200 bus sized asteroids between two inner solar system planets...

well its the end untill the space exploration mod and the devoper of it gets updated for space age dlc after it gets a bit overhuled for space age dlc companlty. hey did you know the space exporation mod and mod aother is what the factrio space age dlc is useing very simlear code actly under the hood. bacly the spage exlpretion mod was actly was so good that it became a offcal dlc after a bit. well i hope the space exlroation mod gets upeded sooner or later to add the extra soalr and palent procager genraton and alot of teh space exporation mod gasme content like space elevators antimater engines and reactors. and qute a few otehr stuff ocne the mod athuer is done diong alot of stuff withte space age dlc when they get aronud to it. hey did you know the space exption mod auther is the main guy the factrio devs actly hired to make the space age dlc by the way.

No surprise there, you actively fight against the game mechanics, ignore the puzzles and fun of it, and then say its not fun

In the WUBE-verse, which happens to have 1 known solar system with 5 known planets: Nauvis, Vulcanus, Gleba (nee Bwuhuo), Fulgora, and Aquilo. There is also the remnants of a shattered planet somewhere, not too distant in interstellar terms, from the solar system which has the five planets. There may be other, unconfirmed, planets, e.g. Akularis, Froodara, Gerkizia, Hexalith, Maraxsis, Mickora, Nekohaven, Quadromire, Tapatrion, Tchekor and Woodoria. It is even rumored that the spice planet, Arrakis, may be found in this universe. Strange place indeed.

You do realize, I hope, that you can change your Steam setting to use the beta feature, connect that to version 1.1.110, install the Space Exploration mod, and have all the fun you think you are missing. In time, once the non-trivial task of updating the massive mod is done, you may even be able to use version 2.0 to play Space Exploration. So far as I know, however, Space Exploration will not be made compatible with Space Age itself. As you have noticed, the two have incompatible gameplay goals.

If it isn't fun, don't do it. Games are supposed to be fun. Turn off SA if it bothers you that much. As just mentioned, you can even turn off the updated mechanics and return to version 1.1.110. Space Exploration does not have to be the only reason. Maybe you just like to have spidertrons set to follow other things, or want a unique remote for each spidertron.

Then don't allow that annoyance to exist. Install a mod. Chests... IN SPACE![mods.factorio.com]

It's amazing the options you have. Are you willing to explore them, or are you happy with the ability to complain about them instead?

Jesus, the writing is atrocious and it hurts trying to read. If you have a different native tongue you should probably use a translator for the things written in your native tongue instead of subjecting others to this pain.

However, I saw one thing in there that kinda needs clarification: The developers had intended on space content long before the Space Exploration mod was even conceived of. You can see this in dev log, see https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-74 referenced from https://www.factorio.com/blog/post/fff-373
