Space Age mod changes the space science recipe (you gotta build a platform). Satellites don't exist in Space Age -- and if you have that mod enabled: when you insert previously built satellite (from pre-SA save file) into the silo, it'll likely just delete the satellite from existence :)
Option 2: you are on vanilla, but are missing the landing pad to receive the space science?
https://wiki.factorio.com/Space_science_pack
For option 2, is the landing pad required in the base game or will they just drop near spawn like the cargo pods do on other planets until you build a landing pad?
Still, the original problem is the old habit of an inserter to remove the science packs.
Now that inserter removes the satellite so fast that the "Auto launch with cargo" does not have time to trigger. What other problems might exist will be noticed, or found, once that inserter is disabled/removed.
so combination of inserters removing the satellite + probably don't have the new (v2) cargo landing pad to receive the space science drops.
However, once the launch has started, if you delete the landing pad the cargo pod will land near spawn - with the satellite still in it. If you don't delete the landing pad, you get a cargo pod with the 1K white science.
Disappointingly you cannot ride the rocket any longer - near as I can tell.
