What happens on Nauvis when you go to a different planet?
I'm on my first Space Age game. I've got a space platform sending me space science packs. My Nauvis base is working (not as 'mega' as lots I see, but working).

So, I was wondering about traveling to a different planet (just researching it now). (I think) I get the mechanics, and expect the first go to be a bit disastrous, but am wondering what happens on Nauvis when I've gone.

Does it just carry on, with the biters etc gradually destroying my base as I'm not there to do repairs? Or does it pause? Or do the biters get less aggressive?

Do I need to make sure the base is fully self-sustaining before I leave it, with repair packs and spare parts being distributed around, etc?

All surfaces continue to function no matter if you are on them or not, so Nauvis still works the same as when you are on it even if you are on a platform or another planet.

It means that you want to at least somewhat automate your defenses, yes.

Yep it carries on without you. Prepare defenses and perhaps a bot network so you can work there remotely.

Thanks. Looks like I have some preparation work to do

personally I find it easiest to just go around with a tank blowing up nests until i've cleared out a huge area around the base- then you can ♥♥♥♥ off for five hours and hopefully not get an attack.

As well , you can pilot tanks remotely, and they can take logistics requests. By using this and filling the tank with bots and construction supplies, you can fend off small attacks, repair things, and even blow up nests if you're willing to be a bit slow and janky about it (Because you have to power a radar to see them on remote view.)

Ideally, you want a rare radar at the edge of your base lines so you can see what's going on and is able to use the tank to drive further if it becomes necessary. The common radars are just bad for this.

Speaking of which: After I eventually leave Nauvis, will there be any reason for me to return to it, or will I be able to just live off of the other planets? I was considering going into each planet empty handed because I like the feeling of starting from scratch.

Whatever happens normally.

You're pretty much forced to start from scratch anyways except for the stuff that you're able to bring on the ship anyways. But generally you can transport science from each of the planets back to Nauvis.

It really depends. I just finished Fulgora, my second planet after Nauvis.

You need to have defences automated and plenty of construction and logistics bots. I was lucky, I was able to wall off four choke points against the biters, the rest was just water as a natural barrier. I did have one case where a behemoth worm spawned next to my walls and my lasers couldn't reach it, but I could use the construction bots to tower creep on it. Also, if you just have a tank in radar coverage then you can remote control it so you are not completely boned.

As for starting from scratch on the new planet. You do, but you also have a base on Nauvis that hopefully has the capability of sending you stuff that you want. I sent several shipments of construction materials just to make my stay on Fulgora a bit more pleasant. You can also bring materials to build the rocket silo and enough materials for one rocket to get you back in a pinch. I constructed that rocket first thing I did. In the end I didn't need it, so eventually, once rocket production capacity was up and running on Fulgora (not that hard actually since the scrap gives you the materials you need except the rocket fuel, but it does give you solid fuel and infinite heavy oil so this is trivial enough) I just packed it full of science packs and sent it on its merry way.

Vulcanus next.

After clearing nests out build your walls beyond your pollution cloud.

On my next play through, I'm planning on shrinking Nauvis before leaving, packing up all I can, and shutting down majority of the pollution and production, because I don't really need anything on Nauvis as far as I can tell, I can come back for uranium and nests later once I've researched artillery and scaled up production on the other planets.

A robust Logistics Network will allow you to work from Remote View as necessary, but most everything your Nauvis base needs to function in your absence should be automated before you leave.

Personally, I prefer sending diplomatic envoys(rockets and tank shells) into the biter nests at risk of being exposed to my pollution cloud, such that they never get a whiff of my pollution.

In fact, I don't believe i have had more than one biter attack on my base caused by pollution, and none since I have started traveling to the other planets in my current save, and my Evolution% on Nauvis is in the high 90s(I turn down enemy expansions timings so its not like every four minutes, but they are not turned completely off, like railworld settings).

The only planets you really need to spend any time on is Gleba (initially), Vulcanus (whenever clearing more zones), and then Nauvis (clearing/capturing biter nests). I've done all I need to on the other planets, so I just stay on Nauvis.

Is it possible to build all of the normal science on a dlc planet? Could you just not come back except maybe on the way to Aquilo for uranium? Id prefer not to have the stress of monitoring nauvi if at all possible.

It very much is. I used the "any planet start" mod, which simply lets you start on any planet you want (which has no science changes needed due to changes to the science tree in space age), and I had to set up production from a Fulgora start. I needed to research all the way up to rockets and the like and was able to do so without any real problem. Once I had rockets and space travel I then went to Nauvis as my first planet to visit.

I only went to Nauvis because, compared to the other planets, its your most "reliable" resource generation planet. Each other planet is good at *something* and is decent at everything else, while Nauvis is generically good at everything.

To put it another way, the DLC planets are Specialist Stores, while Nauvis is the general store. You can make all the generic science anywhere, but Nauvis generally just has the real estate you'd need to make it at a scale that isn't a glacial pace.

Hang on. What? You can pilot tanks remotely? Is this something new in Space Age that I hadn't spotted, or was it like that in 1.x as well and I was playing for years without knowing?
