So i need to try upgrade raw materials.. and then upgrade intermediate parts.. to get better end products? I think i got it..
if you put quality modules in a machine, you get an RNG chance at the output being higher. If you have 10% chance, it's a 10% chance the output is higher quality than current. Each tier is also 1/10th as likely as the last one. So that 10% quality would be 9% chance of Uncommon, 0.9% for rare, 0.09% for Epic, and 0.009% for Legendary.
There's 2 general ways to do quality.
1. Craft Quality Items from Quality Components. This one you gurantee quality, but it comes at the downside of complexity. You would put quality on mining drills and smelters, and then from there you'll get quality plates to then craft quality with. This is more tedious as you'll now have to sort out and store the quality components and bring them to other parts of your factory - it can get clogged up and complicated really easy.
2. RNG Quality Items from lower quality components. - This has the advantage of simplicity, even if output is less guranteed. Just slap quality modules on your assembler making the end product, and it will have a chance to be higher.
The fun part is that you can combine both these methods together! Remember that thing I said above about each tier being less likely? If you still have 10% quality and you're starting from Rare, it's a 9% chance you're upgrading to Epic and a 1% of legendary!
Where this really comes into play is the Recycler from Fulgora. If you don't get the quality you want the recycler allows you to recycle some of the components to try again. Additionally, some items don't recycle into others (IE: Steel) - but they DO recycle into themselves. So a Recycler can be fed lots of regular steel with quality modules, and while most of it will be destroyed some of it will be "upcycled" and come out quality.
2) or, forget the entire supply chain, and instead go straight for recycler quality loops -- called "upcycling". Basically mass overproduce collectors, and use quality modules only on those specific assemblers. Recycle/upcycle (with recyclers+quality modules) the vast numbers of "normal" collector's into their higher quality base parts.
BTW, I should add that quality modules, themselves, have "quality" -- higher quality quaility-modules give you better odds (will edit my first post to add that piece of knowledge).
Plus I have mod for trash.. and infinite ores. I love to build huge but hate having to keep moving so yes I cheat with these 2 mods.
But soon as I can i remove trash cans and pipe stuff back into factory. Until i get recyclers.
Question i have solid parts being upgraded.. But how do I do fluids?
Number 7 in the list: fluids do not have quality.
Legendary asteroids made into legendary calcite and used to make legendary molten copper. Liquid can't be legendary, but the stone that is a byproduct of the molten copper will be legendary. Use the legendary stone to make legendary bricks and concrete.
legendary asteroids made into legendary iron ore.
That covers most of the basic resources. Planet specific resources will have to be upcycled.
