The green zone is the area in which drones can place items, they cannot take anything from chests in the green zone unless you are deconstructing something.
They will automatically replace broken buildings and use repairs packs if they are available, meaning a provider chest or storage within the orange zone, well it will tell you anyway if a chest is not within logistics area.
You can see supply area(yellow color) and construction area(green color) when hover the robot ports. Construction robots work inside the construction area, logistic robot work inside the supply area. So if buildings or chest is outside the area, robots won't do anything on that because it is not their duty.
The red/orange zone is the Logistics zone. Anything that interacts with "Logistics" must be covered by a roboport zone for it to work. The Provider and Requester chests (red/blue/purple/yellow/green) must be within this area to work. Once within an area, items in Provider-type chests (red, purple, yellow, green) will advertise their contents to the network as available. Requester chests (blue, green) within this zone can broadcast any "requests" that they want fulfilled. Any logistic robot that is placed within a roboport will head out to take items from "providers" to "requesters".
-Note: As people have explained, roboports will ONLY connect to eachother if this zone touched/overlaps with the zone of another roboport. Look for a dotted line pointing to another roboport to tell if the roboport zone is touching.
Construction robots mostly care about the yellow/green zone, which extends beyond the orange/red logistics zone, but also includes the red zone. They will use repair packs within their or any connected roboport to repair damaged items within this construction (yellow/green) zone area. If no repair packs are in roboports, construction robots will look for a repair pack in a provider chest (red, purple, yellow, green) within the logistics (red) zone anywhere in its network, and can pick up a repair pack if needed. It will place the repair pack in the roboport if any is left.
Destroyed buildings (walls, turrets, etc) within the construction zone will be replaced by construction robots, but you must have an already-constructed item within a provider chest (red, yellow, purple, green) within the logistics (red) zone. It will NOT take iron/copper/gears to assemble a turret and place that.
I did not list any buildings, because robots cannot really interact with MOST buildings within their zone. They will not - for example - put coal into furnaces, ore into furnaces, or plates into assemblers. You must use chests with inserters to pull finished products from machines, and another chest/inserter to take raw ingredients to place them into assemblers. You will often see two chests (a provider, usually red. and a requester, usually blue) next to assemblers to be able to take in ingredients and take out finished products. You can pair up two assemblers on either side of these two chests.
If you want to do everything by logistics bots (which is a valid technique), you will need dozens or even hundreds of chests, and hundreds or even thousands of robots. Keep in mind that roboports can only hold so many robots (350?) within them, and can only charge 4 at a time. In a heavy robot-use area, put down extra roboports in an area to make sure that robots do not hover for long waiting to charge. A queued robot is a worthless robot.
