Should I play the game without Space Age if I'm completely new to it?

two version not compatible and has overlapping contents in the early stage. I see no reason to play it twice.

I would suggest playing the vanilla version at least once through before attempting Space Age. SA is substantially longer and more complicated, and might be rather overwhelming if you have not mastered the base game.

I'd definitely recommend the first playthrough without Space Age. The base game is overwhelming enough for new people and SA easily doubles the content, maybe even more. Don't get me wrong though, it's awesome content. There's just a lot of it to swallow at once.

I recommend playing without Space Age first. The base game has enough content for hundreds of hours.
Space Age is designed for people who already know the game and need a new challenge. So it's a bit more difficult than the base game.

To me, it depends on the player's background and personality.

I don't see a lot of experience in automation games in your profile. But at the same time, many games you played are rough survival games. That probably means that where others see grind and pain, you see fun and challenges.

Then you might jump straight in SA, I don't see a problem.

However, if you plan to try both versions in the near future anyway, then I think it would make sense to start without SA, rather than the reverse order.

You're the boss! Coffee? :coffeetime:

You might also consider space age, but with tamed (no biters or peaceful) biter settings on the first planet. In my opinion, biters are the most distracting and unsettling part, esp. when you try to figure stuff out.

I'm still only playing the base game as I enjoy it so much.

PRO TIP:

DON'T WATCH OPTIMALIZATION VIDEOS on youtube or anywhere else.. try to play the game without any or too much "help" from the Internet.

I watched some videos and it ended up ruining my entire experience with the game so I never finished a single round. Play without mods, just do the vanilla.

Why?

Watching what others do only makes you copy them and that ruins the entire game and you lose your creative and curious standing.

Go straight into space age! Honestly don't see a reason to hold off on it. SA just has less repetition because there's more versatility in utilizing planets. heck don't go to space until you feel ready lol

I think if I bought the game today, I would definitely only go with vanilla to make sure I even like it. Then I would buy Space Age after launching some rockets.
Space Age really needs you to understand how to make Nauvis (your starting planet) self sufficient. You need at least one play-through of the base game to really understand how that works, since you don't know what you don't know. So I would hold off Space Age until building the base game rocket at least once.

Some sound advice here, but here's my take; you start off with Vanilla as some like to preach, and you work your way to launching your first rocket, (or a few hundred). Victory!

Then you get the DLC, and you find out how easy it is now to build and launch rockets, you will come back here and curse all those who said "Vanilla play through first".

Get yourself SA, and save yourself to never, ever have to deal with Rocket Control units, ever.

No RCUs in vanilla 2.0 either. Building one vanilla 2.0 rocket is exactly the same as building 20 SA rockets.

Yes you are correct, I was thinking of the version before update, my bad.
