Buying it here or on gog?
Are there any benefits for buying it on steam?

Not really. Especially now that you get a steam key even from the gog purchase. I would even argue that using the steam version is a disadvantage because of forced auto updates and limited amount of "beta" choices. The best version comes straight from factorio.com as it is completely drm free and not tied to anything extra.

So turn the auto updates off and just leave it on a single version.

Try it.

Bet you can't do it with the Steam version.

You'll have to use the beta feature and hope they don't force update you anyway.

Unless you have a personal reason, and preference is a valid one, you can purchase it on the Factorio website. Depending on your region that even sometimes makes it a bit cheaper. It also means, of course, that you are not supporting the other site (gog or steam) with the purchase. A philosophical outlook to be sure, but one you can consider.

I wish that was possible. But steam removed the option to turn updating off a long long time ago. Even when the option was there steam still occasionally updated your games because some of the people programming steam are just plain incompetent.

I bought it on GOG. I got factorio.com acces and a steam key for both 1.x and 2.x.

At the moment I have the zips installed from Factorio.com for 1.1 and 2.0.

So the gog version is most value for your money. You have the game on three platforms for the price of one.

Only the soundtrack for 2.0 I have bought here on steam. For some reason it is only available here. Which is bad.

You can. Just don't start the game from steam. Launch the game from it's exe

Tried that. It launched steam and updated the game before launching the game.

I can add my voice to say that I tried that too with the same result. Which seemed contrary to what I believed it did before.
I use the factorio.com standalone/zip versions for modded playthroughs, though.

It's even more tricky, dare I say underhanded, than that. If you launch the Steam game directly, it will actually force close the game, launch Steam if it's not running and then launch the game from within Steam using the 'steam://' URL handler.

Valve has their fingers deep into the plum pudding.

I think games that do not have built in steam features in the exe can be launched without steam interfering but factorio definitely does have those features since they implemented joining through steam friends sometime in 0.17 or 0.18. I can't remember the exact version.

Games that don't directly integrate Steam will sometimes let you do that, mostly if they were DRM free on purpose before even being put on Steam. The standalone zips from factorio.com should lack that integration and remain totally separate.

Not sure if you know it, but you can still get the standalone version from factorio.com even if you purchased the game on Steam. You can log in with your Steam credentials there and it lets you download it.

Of course PunCrathod knows that. That's how getting a Steam key from the GOG purchase works too. Buying it on GOG or Steam allows you to confirm you have bought the game on one of those platforms on factorio.com, and having (it confirmed that you've) bought the game on factorio.com allows you to get a Steam key.
