In space age it also applies to egg rafts from Gleba.
About the "go to space or redesign first", building a space platform that is capable of reaching any of the first 3 planets will take quite a bit of resources, and as a result time.
So you could very well do both, use your existing factory to buildup your platform (or at least the resources for it) while you design your "proper" factory somewhere else.
You will need to continue to defend on Nauvis while you are away anyway so having a bit more infrastructure wouldn't be a bad idea.
Destroying nests to prevent attacks usually costs you less resources than defending against constant attacks.
Since you don't have access to artillery until you visit Vulcanus, taking out closeby nests before leaving wouldn't be a bad idea.
It does increase evolution though, so only destroy those that would potentially get in the pollution cloud soon.
So if you are a fan of PLD's, yeah, everything will feel tougher to kill.
IMO*, even if you aren't planning to go to another planet for a long time, it is still reasonable to go to space even before production and utility science, and go down the space science tree for things like tier 2 modules, Kovarex enrichment, and the logistics system.
