Because they developed the expansion to have enough content to be sold at that price. When they were deciding on the scope of what they were going to develop, they decided on a large expansion rather than lots of small DLCs or a sequel.

(also, it's $35 USD)

I just realized factorio is also 40 bucks?! It was 30 bucks before. What is this insane price hike and no sale? Sorry but thats just scummy and leaves a terrible example.

Watch AAA studios copy them since indies did it too

Yeah. They should have priced the game at $50 so they could just switch from 40% to 30% sales when they want to hike prices for inflation. How dare they offer the lower price 24/7/365 rather than sucker people into thinking that price is some sort of altruistic 'discount'.

AAA's are not going to copy them because sales addictions are far more profitable.

I... I genuine have no clue what logic that was.

Because that's literally how it works. Most games will mark up the list price so that they can have 'sales' at the price they want to sell the game. Steam even outright advises developers not to put the game at the price they want to sell the game at, but instead mark up the price so they have room to offer 'sales'.

Tell us you don't understand inflation (money becomes worth less) without telling us you don't understand inflation.

... even if you disbelieve the fact that people are more likely to buy a game if it's priced $50 with frequent 40% off sales than they are if it's priced $30 year-round and other similar things... also keep in mind Steam bribes devs to have sales.

E.g. Steam promotes games that have sales. So rather than pricing your game at $9, you effectively get free advertising if you instead price it at $10 and regularly offer 10% off sales.

Sure does seem insane to me. Better to just purchase it from the WUBE website where it'll only cost $35.

I didn't do an exhaustive search, of course, but the cheapest bucks I could find were Angora kits (bred for their wool) at $50 each. A junior buck Champagne d'Argent (bred for meat) lists at $70 and a proven buck is $70 to $90. Even if you found a slightly cheaper source, say $40 each, 40 bucks is gonna cost quite a bit. Each one, let along all 40, is going to cost more than the game if you use cash rather than bucks.

Just as an extra note, possibly of interest for those who would like to keep things legal, I don't think trading bucks for the game is actually legal. The license, what you actually purchase rather than the game itself, is listed as 'non-exclusive, non-transferable, limited, and revocable right and licence to use the purchased or downloaded copy of Factorio for your personal, non-commercial use.' I don't think a barter of bucks for the game fits in that license. IANAL & YMMV.

The only thing insane about it are the amount of people whining about the price instead of looking at how many hours you get playing the game.

I mean, factory games have got more popular because of factorio,
There is satisfactory. mindustry. dyson sphere project. and a fair few others.

Personally. I think space age adds enough to the game to be worth the price. if you don't feel that way, and you want an entirely new experience. other smaller developers would be happy to have your business. I see no problem here?

I think, the OP has a point.

Believe it or not, for a lot of people is 1 or 2 x 32 euro a lot of money.
The developers of this game wants to be politically correct and thinking of the well being of the society, i remember.
So why not help the 'poor people' with a sale action so now and then?

My 2 cents....
