Extra batteries are there in case you consume more power than you produce (for a bit at least).
Plus you can have more than one personal robo port so you'll want batteries if using multiple ports.
For personal lasers I'd say batteries are a must. I only use 2 batteries and upgrade them when available.
My current setup has 5 standard Personal Roboports supporting 50 bots, and two Fission Reactors still take several minutes to charge those once depleted. That's charging the Roboports to a point where the Robots will actually deploy. Charging them to full takes even longer.
Whether you use batteries or not, you still need a means of producing the power: portable solar panels, portable fission reactors, or portable fusion reactors are the options.
