Play around with the sliders until you get a start that works for you so you can learn the fine points of the game.
Also, I feel there is nothing wrong with beefing up the resource richness. I like to turn up the frequency of oil and uranium, because they can be hard to find at the defaults.
Personally I like playing with fewer trees; they are a pain to cut down! But later in the game you can destroy them with grenades, a tank, or robots.
OK, I'm guilty of "save-scumming," making a mistake and then reverting to a save file.

There is a mod that adds water tiles. You place them just like landfills.
Basically the same thing.

It does.
I only use it to make water supplies in nice, straight lines for my power plants.
But I'm trapped alone on an alien planet with hostile creatures from hell
Of course I'm going to dig moats and try to prevent my base from being overrun
