Bigger only slightly better
This is a thread about the Red Mining Drill which i prefer to call it. But Wube calls its the Big Mining Drill. It lacks imagination. Thats not to say its not a bad name. Because it still fits.

They are big, and thats a little better than electric mining drill. But you still have to follow the same design principle compared to electric drills. The Big Mining Drill is just.. Bigger. And thats fine!

But hear me out? When you open the map and hover over a patch of for example coal the game will display the total amount of resources in that patch of coal. What if the Red Mining Drill would cover all this area? So you put down 1 Red Mining Drill and it will slowly mine everything in the area. If you put 2 of them, the area will be mined out that much faster. But this allows players to design a mining operation differently, and for people who want to mine every single resource in the patch, using the Red Mining Drill is the way to go.

its already "better" from the 50% more resources given in the tooltip.

They are not just "a little better".
2.5 times as fast, a wider area for mining, only consuming a portion of the ore deposit when it mines (50% at normal quality and 8% at legendary) and the ability to spit out "stacks" on the belts with the proper technologies researched.

The whole game is about getting resources faster and faster to feed your ever-growing factory, I don't see the point of slowly mining out an entire deposit.
Maybe it's just me and there are scenarios where you want to only get a small-ish amount of resources mined from a deposit, I just can't picture it.

Only makes it slightly better. What if its coverage area automatically filled the entire resource patch? For example when you hover over resources on the map it will highlight the area and tell you how much there s. Imo the Big Mining Drill would be even more amazing if it could cover that whole area automatically. This way you didnt need to plop drills, electricity poles and conveyer belts over the whole area unless you wanted to mine really fast with more than one drill. If it covered the whole area you could just set it and forget it. That would be a substantial improvement over the electric mining drill :) Have a nice day

Sounds like you might enjoy having a modded miner. There's probably a mod that does this already. If there isn't, you could create this item and then upload it to share it with others.

Thx for the suggestion, i may have to check that out.

Im writing this down for future reference. It would be cool if it took up 4 inventory spaces instead of 1 so that it felt big when in the inventory as well. Take care

I mean, you could also solve this by making a big miner blueprint that you just slap down on a deposit and let your bots take care of building it.

The big mining drill covers a larger area. With the electric mining drills, if you try and fit beacons in to increase mining speed, you wind up with strips of unmined resources in the patch when the drills run out of accessible material. You then either have to move the entire set up to use up the rest of the deposit or just abandon it.

Using the big mining drills with beacons allows you to set up the mine once and mine out the entire patch. Each drill can be affected by multiple beacons and each drill can have 4 productivity modules. This allows you to output an avalanche of ore while using less of the resource patch per unit time when compared to electric mining drills set up in a similar manner.
