Place ghosts straight from inventory without going to map screen
I feel like I must be missing something, this is such an obvious thing to want to do, but I can't find anything up to date from a Google search that tells me how to do it, and no combination of left/middle/right/shift/alt/ctrl clicking seems to do it.

Like if you go to the map screen / remote view, you can call up the inventory and if you try placing something, it places ghosts for bots to do. How do you do that (can you?) without going to remote view for things that aren't in your inventory?

I'm getting the impression this isn't actually possible without going to remote view first.

If you set your game options right, you'll be able to select an item from your quickbar (which does not involve having that item in inventory) and building it will automatically generate a ghost item, no need to hold shift or any other key, just a simple left click.

Place in hotbar, press hotbar key, hold shift?

You can only do this in close range (rather, in "visible" range) due to, you know, NOT having remote view.

If you press q on an item you want to place you should be able to force ghosts with shift if you are in range, i'm pretty sure ive done it many times as i run out of belts in my inventory then i just grab a ghost and continue running.

There is a setting for placing things in the hotbar when you don't have them in inventory, or even available from research yet. If you select something from the hotbar which is not in your inventory you will have a ghost item in the cursor.

Settings -> Interface settings Interaction section:
Pick ghost item if no items are available
Show all items in selection lists

Yeah, that's pretty much the exact use case I was asking this for. Turns out, as the other comment says, there's a setting you have to enable to get it to work.

Oh, you have to fiddle with the settings. Great, thank you for the help!
