Saved game help!
So I started a multiplayer with a buddy and my brother is wanting to join. Is there anyway to set up my current save to stay active while im at work so they can play while im away? Instead of having to wait for me to get off work, because as of now no one can play on the world until I get home to host from the current save.

Easiest way for you guys to do it would be just to share the save fine between you whenever you finish a session. The saves are located in %appdata%\Factorio - just give them your save file when you share a session, and then grab one from them when you want to join after they played some.

Alternative, simpler to use - but harder to set up and (possibly not free) - solution would be to find a Factorio server to rent. It's a bit more complicated if you want to use mods and to upload the save, but once it's done you all can just go on about it with minimal hassle, and even set up a permanent world (that would run even if no one is online) if you feel brave.

If one of you can keep computer turned on then you can install the dedicated server on that machine. Sure you can host it on a paid site but why pay if you can do it for free.

If they are able to connect to you and you're all in different places/homes, then you already have a setup that can work. Just leave your PC on for them to join. I don't know if there's any kind of time-out from inactivity on your character/your side though.

At first it seems weird to leave your PC on like that but you'll get used to it and then they can play whenever they want to connect and play.

Later if you want to do other things/games with your PC then you can try to dedicated server, and your setup should be similar that they can already still connect to your home/PC.

Well the reason big websites like Youtube are not hosted on an old computer in someone's basement is that consumer grade ADSL does not provide suitable upload bandwidth.

Unless you want to pay $500/month for a leased line you are better off renting a server located in a data centre than trying to run your website on your home computer.

A computer running 24/7 is free? You must be living at your parents.

Uhh okay. That sounds damn expensive, this internet, where you live.
I can get a 100/100Mbit line for around 40€ here. Plenty for a server for two.

That sounds like a business line with an uptime service guarantee. Place I help out has a 100/25 business line and it's less than half that. Seems excessive for a Factorio server either way, consumer service is probably good enough as long as it doesn't violate the terms of service.

Geezus, the guy want's to play some Factoiro with his buddy and a brother, what the hell is with this aggression and attempts at dunking? There's time and place, guys, and this is not it. Sheesh.

Yep. Way overkill for a two-friends-wanna-play setup :)
Terms of service doesn't even mention those things anymore here, only an arbitrary data limit.

He said he has already played it in coop multiplayer, that means his bandwidth is enough. There's not much of a difference between Steam coop and dedicated server connection. Only that dedicated server will pause the game while no players are online.

Also cost of electricity is its own topic, i pay for my house if that satisfies you. Also these costs are very different depending on country, both electricity and internet are rather cheap here. 200 Mbit is around 30 € a month with no data limit.

Right. Just don't call it "Free", okay? You know it is not free.

It would make 0 difference to me at least, it's normal to have PC on. So it would just be on the background. Sure if you are still school children then obey your parents :)

And if you are on same timezone then it doesn't even matter if you turn it off for the night.

Still not free.

Edit:
And your PC needs more power when doing more work.
Also still not free.
