Can you rearrange the train wagons once hooked up

You can press [G] and [V] to detach and attach wagons to your train.
I've never used these buttons, but they should let you mess with your trains.

I'm not aware of a way to do what you are asking, aside from picking up wagons and putting them back down in the correct order, which I'm sure you've already figured out.

If there's some specific thing you are trying to accomplish, you could describe it and see if anyone has an alternative solution. Most likely, the answer would involve more trains, more stations, and/or more filters.

Did you change the controls?

If so, then press whatever keys you assigned to those two actions.

If not then you are wrong - you are either pressing the wrong button, or you are pressing the button when it doesn't make sense while ignoring the error message that pops up on screen.

You have to be 'driving' the locomotive to do it I think. Hit enter to enter the locomotive, then you can press the key and it will tell you that it detached the rolling stock. Then you can move that locomotive somewhere else and back another into the same place and hit the other key to connect the rolling stock to the new locomotive.
I don't know if it's actually useful with vanilla train mechanics, there's a mod for doing it via the circuit network but I think it would need something more to work out well.
