When does space age start?
Hi I have recently got really into this game after it initially failed to grab me. I have been enjoying it a lot since turning on peaceful mode and learning the ropes without any pressure. I am now considering buying the DLC as I really like the feeling of a new game that has a load of cool stuff to be excited for over the coming weeks of play sessions. Just wondering when the new DLC starts and if I should purchase it now or wait until I have finished the main game first?

It changes the tech tree and pace of the original base game. As such I would recommend finishing the base game first before considering getting the DLC. When you do get the DLC you will want to restart the game from scratch as a result of the changes it makes to the progression.

Although if you are still super early (only at green science) then I think you will be okay as the DLC stuff comes somewhat after that point.

About mid way through blue science when you get the rocket. (they moved it down on research). after that you work towards launching a space platform inside the rocket to get started. and you slowly work your way up in research and tech for the space platform.

If you want to rush right into it, you can get quality modules alongside the other modules.

And then, when it's time to decide which science to work on next after chemical science, you have the choice for space science alongside the other options of production and utility science. That involves using rockets to do construction in orbit (where space science is actually crafted)

Some vanilla tech options are changed to require space science when the space age mod is active.

Then pretty early in space science you can get access to the other planets.

If you go production science instead, elevated rails are a Nauvis-bound space age feature.

---

If you do get the DLC, quality and elevated rails are also packaged into standalone mods, so you ought to be able to add them to your base vanilla playthrough if you wanted.

I have literally just started automating red circuits to make the next research modules so I'm at the perfect point to jump in?

Yup you should be fine, I don't believe the DLC changes any of the existing recipes up until that point or anything like that so your existing base should be good.

Yes if you haven't gone past Blue Science, you can switch to space age without a single thing being different yet.
