First space platform
I am almost ready to build my first space platform, what should I bring up there, and is laser turret good against asteroid?

I have seen someone with both laser and normal turrets and the laser turrets caused the platform to run out of energy but luckily they had normal turrets as backup.

I recommend making first platform for just science, you don't need turrets.
Make 2nd platform for going to a different planet, so no need for crafting science on it.

I recommend 2 furnaces for iron when landing on planet, I have one on my platform to produce ammo and I have constant messages of turrets being out of ammo but I landed on a planet and I can't go up and fix it since I need to make a rocket silo+launch a rocket to do it. It is just barely surviving.

Laser turret is quite weak against asteroids and has too high range, produce ammo on-board and use gun turrets.
Don't place them at the edges but closer to the middle - you want to shoot asteroids that are heading towards you and will hit, otherwise you waste plenty of ammo shooting things that are just passing by. While traveling your ship will mostly be hit from the front, when stationary asteroids will come from all angles. So it's good to have more turrets in front and few to cover other sections.

It's good to prepare a way to steer the flow of resources on board towards space or hub - income of fuel and iron dropped from the orbit can help in early stages of ofther planets.

One more thing to note, as long as your first platform is not going to travel to other planets, you don't need defenses at all. "Dangerous" asteroids only appear outside of nauvis.

I know it's going to spoil my playthrough a bit, but...

Does that mean if you're not well prepared when landing on a new planet, you can lose your "run"?

no you can make progress on any world from start to rocket on some it might take longer then on others but well thats the price you pay for going unprepared.....

I don't think you can lose, I think you get everything you need on the planet (although I only went to 1 other planet).
So I think you can always build everything again and make a new platform.

No, there are ways to build a rocket silo and rocket on other planets from scratch. But it will definitely take longer than building and sending another platform from nauvis.

Alright guys, thanks for the replies. That's a relief lol.

I'm not that good at the game so I'm probably going to mess up when launching my first platform, I know it.

I'm playing with a friend but he's just as good as me, just in different areas of the game.

Btw, you can put items with inserter into space or lava to get rid of excess items. This is really important for the space platform.

Nice, will try to remember that!

My first platform was just a simple static one to produce space science, no engines etc. This one doesn't need turrets, as you only see small chunks in space that don't do any damage when hitting the platform (and turrets ignore these little ones, these are the ones that get picked up by the grapple things).

My 2nd platform is a ship, so produces fuel and has engines etc. This one does have turrets, but I just use regular red ammo shipped up from the planet using auto requesting, no lasers due to the power requirements, as mentioned above.

You get the bigger asteroids as you travel from one planet to the next, so you do need turrets on these.

Note, I've only flown from Nauvis to Vulcanus so far, so no idea if this changes for other planets!

I would not recommend anyone to go completely empty to a new planet. At least always bring solar panels, sub stations, electric furni, obviously a landing pad and at least blue assemblers. With vulcanos also 2 -3 refineries and 5 chem plants.

I must warn people going to fulgora that fulgora has way worse solar panel efficiency, so if you want your space platform to not run out of bullets while you're on the surface you need to have nuclear power. Or just send your platform back to nauvis while you still have bullets.

Lasers isn't worth it in space.... I tried using them whilst having a huge battery pack on the platform so it could shoot for a while.... even the normal yellow ammo outclasses the damage a laserturret does and considdering those don't hog power (single solarpanel =300kw, laser shot =800) you don't need to build a huge solarsail and a huge batterypack.... so just go with normal turrets and red ammo instead.... maybe use/produce some yellow ammo as backup seeing as that only takes iron and seems to be in ample supply in space

Or just make yellow bullets in space using iron, in space
