Beta Version change (Solved)
I was near the end of a mission in the mod "Story Missions" (highly recommended!) when the expansion came out and factorio went to 2.XX.

Under the 'Betas' tab in the game's property window I selected a 1.1 version (I think 1.1.110 was one I tried). But the mod (and others that haven't updated to the newest version really fast) does not work because of Factorio version running.

**Main Question** Do I need a beta access code to change factorio versions this way? I would think that access code was for betas of unreleased material....not former versions.

The only thing I've noticed that seems odd is when I launch factorio, on the home screen in the upper right corner it says 2.0.8 build. This text remains no matter what version I switch to.

This would make me think the game was not changing versions, but when I select different beta versions, factorio downloads and updates, as if changing versions.

What am I doing wrong?

as for your situation - do you own the DLC? if so i believe you need to uninstall it before downgrading (untick it in the DLC tab of properties)

That sounds reasonable. The DLC apparently overrides the beta selection. This interaction feels a bit strange.
it is because Space Age requires the (modified) 2.0 executable - so it won't let you change it while Space Age is activated

I am not sure what you are doing wrong.

Betas do not require any code. You should be able to select 1.1.110. The game needs to be "updated" afterwards.
Next to the "Play" (or "Update") Button the version should also be displayed.

firstly yes, Story Missions is a fantastic mod :-)
and one of the reasons i have my 1.1.110 time capsule build of the game lol :-)

if you don't - get back to me and we will go from there :-)

There is another option: Download the old version from the website.
https://factorio.com/download/archive/1.1.110
That will require to log in with steam, I believe.
This option might be suitable if you have enough disk space and want to both finish an old map an play the new version.
You will most likely need to transfer the savegames/mods manually, though.

So it looks like the answer is to disable the dlc and then change the beta number. Sorry I forgot to mention that I had the DLC; I just assumed that everybody got it immediately lol.
