That slider has two sides, you can set the minimum to 0 to not even ask for any from the surface (or to whatever amount you want/need like you would normally).
The other side of the slider allows you to "auto trash" anything above that amount, set to "infinite" by default but you can set it to any amount you want, like 1200 in your example.
This method has been working great when shipping intermediates, I enjoyed having an automatic request for silo materials that doesn't store the extra 10 slots of junk that comes up in rocket loads.
