Defense of your ship?
Hello
I did some ♥♥♥♥ with my ship.

I had put 2 - 3 machine guns at the front. The outward trip was ok but on the way back I lost 1 machine gun and there I was hit by an asteroid.

I'm good at fixing everything.

So in terms of defense what do you do? I put uranium ammunition in my machine guns and I have the impression that it's not enough.

do you use other types of turret?

Maybe I need to put more turret?

THANKS

All of my ships have about 10 turrets or so surrounding the ship, armed with yellow ammo made right on the platform. Works like a charm for the 3 inner planets.

What a confident but unnecessary quality to mention, lol =)). It is not like it is common to be good at fixing "many" instead of everything.

Back to question, for first three planets, gun turrets with enough damage upgrade and locally craftable magazines are fine, or directly import higher ammos. Just add more turrets.
For further planets use rockets. Do not use electric or laser weapons. Always have repair packs and replacements parts in platform hub.

I generally line the front of my ship with turrets (except for where I have asteroid collectors). I just fire the yellow ammunition, which I produce on the ship.

My first interplanetary trip, after a test flight to see what things were like, I used two rows of turrets at the front. I'm not sure if it was actually needed at the time, and I never needed to do that later on.

But then, I was keeping up with the physical damage researches, and was playing (IMO) fairly slowly.

More turrets, and build the ammo on the platform, there is way more iron than the other resources, so plenty for ammo production.

Keep it simple, as basic yellow ammo works fine, no need for the advance stuff. Just do some of the damage and speed upgrades.

And if yellow ammo doesn't cut it for the first three planets just means you need to research more damage upgrades.

Gun Turrets with yellow ammo is plenty strong to secure your ship for trips to Vulcanus, Fulgora and Gleba. Just put them on the outer rim of your ship, more in front. Depending on your speed you might want a 2 row design. 150 kph is a good travel speed, 200+ kph and you likely hit a stray asteroid. You can set target priorities on your turrets for asteroids. If you have some red ammo going to guns to focus medium asteroids.
Only use ammo you can produce on the ship, never import ammo for regular use on solar trips.

Solid line of gun turrets on front. And use pumps between thrusters and tanks to limit speed and you fine. Just get around 5 or so physical damage research done. At time my speed was 90Km/S and my front line took care of 90% of every thing. My second line rarely fired. If was faster....

Current ship runs at top speed of 40Km/S and clears every thing in the way easily to all 3 planets. From there on I dont know. But if need I can slow it down a little and likely be fine.

Put more turrets, organize a steady supply to them and boost ammo firerate/damage. You literally need only yellow bullets (not even red ones since there is no copper earlygame), and you are good to go everywhere except maybe Aquilo.
Nobody has any ratio to tell you how much them you need, just experiment and find out yourself.

https://imgur.com/a/zHD443Y thats more than enough for travelling between first 3 planets. Not sure about energy for gleba/fulgora tho

Wire the platform to 2 pumps between your fuel tanks and engines, set it to cut the pumps above 50kph, it'll fire the engines in bursts and not go as fast. Speed will oscillate big, but still probably better than nothing. Give your platform some more time to make bullets.

I went a little more complex, my engine pumps have a duty cycle, only operate when not in orbit and below a set speed. Finally there's an override I use to prime the engines / push the platform out of orbit.

Don't bother with uranium ammo. Just make basic ammo locally on the platform. Just have a bunch of turrets. Note that turrets can take ammo from each other with inserters, so you can pack in a lot of turrets up front with just 1 space in between them, as long as the one at the back of the chain is able to feed in more ammo from a belt. Research the repeatable that improves your turret damage. With a lot of concentrated fire doing the inserter trick to pack in more turrets in less space, you can easily take down the small and medium asteroids you'll encounter among the inner planets, even with the weakest ammo.

You only need central turrets to cover incoming asteroids from the front while traveling. Anything outside of the width of your ship coverage is basically wasted ammo on stuff that had no chance of colliding with the platform. This is rather important for freighter ships doing automatic deliveries because there is no chance in hell they have the iron plate producing capabilities to keep up refining ore to make enough ammo for automated trips.

Thanks for all your tips guys.

I also noticed that when I turn on the ship it tends to go at full speed.

I have to look into limiting the starting power.

You can put in less thrusters to lower your acceleration and top speed.
You should put a wire from the Hub to two Pumps between your thrusters and the fuel production. The speed of the ship can be read and the pumps set up to only allow fuel to flow if the speed is below YX. With that your ship fluctuates arround the set target speed.

I put a nuclear reactor with laser turrets only. I know... but im at "lvl 9" dmg for lasers
