Keeping base safe while on other planets?
How are people managing their bases from biter attacks when they travel to other planets? In my game, biters nests just keep spreading, so the clearing I did before I left is gone, and biters start attacking my bases again. I love the game, but keeping my starter base defended from biters is getting tedious at this point that I can't even enjoy the expansion without micro-managing biter issues from remote...

You say you have problems with nests spawning, but nests will not spawn within a fully walled of perimeter, assuming that there are no nests inside that you have forgotten about. I just walled in a significant section to give me breathing room. I was a bit lucky and could use water as a natural barrier mostly.

I've had to go out a few times to clear new nests that spawned from ones that I had missed, but now i haven't had to deal with biters for tens of hours.... except for the ones that occasionally come to nibble at my walls.

Nests don't spawn as much as spread by sending out scouts to form new camps, but yeah, it's the "nibbling at your walls" part that is the problem. That's easy to deal with if you are on the planet, but if you are on a different planet, it becomes more difficult, and you have to either have turrets at all points of your wall (very resource intensive if you build a very spread out wall as you suggested) or use a tank from remote to go and deal with the problem.
I was a bit lucky here and only had four choke points to wall off, and a dual line of laser turrets with the walls keep the biters away. I do need repair packs to and bots to keep things pristine though.

In all seriousness though. I had a bigger base before the expansion that we also walled off (I played with friends) and that had robo ports and lasers around the entire perimeter to keep the biters away. As long as nothing gets inside your walls no new nests will spawn.

Sure it's resource intensive, but Factorio lets you automate tons of stuff. Even walls, flame throwers and laser turrets by the thousands or even tens of thousands is doable.

Clear nests within your pollution range, establish an automatic way to resupply your walls with ammo, leave a well equipped tank to remote control while you are gone.
as I said, I did all that, but because the biter nests spread closer and closer to your base over time, eventually I have to make a trip back to start clearing again, which is just plain annoying...

As soon you get a Spidertron up and running, you never have to go back.
I upgraded all of the Laser turret science to 7, made a double wall in white none polluted space, made a double wall with full stacked laser turrets, I have around 90 so far. I also linked this to a specific bot network whose only job is to supply and use repair packs after attacks, built nuclear power because that drains a lot of power. Now, as long as I dont expand past this space, bugs have seem to be a non issue but eventually I will need more resources.

I made my walls in a way that no new nest expansion can happen within my "territory".

Ditto. I do this as well but by choosing the 'Train World' map preset on startup which automatically disables enemy expansion. Everyone can play how they like, but I feel the more spread out resource patches for train world preset is the cost I pay for the slightly cheaty feeling I get from having enemy expansion disabled.
I've always done a "stealth factory" setup: every outlier machine is loaded to the brim with Efficiency Modules to reduce pollution significantly. Using lakes as natural barriers, I build walls out a LONG ways from the main base (at least 5 tiles out from the pollution cloud) and defend them with 1 Laser Turret per power pole. All wall areas are serviced by Roboport with construction bots armed with 50 Repair Packs, and they have a Passive Supply Chest as well loaded with 100 Walls and 25 Power Poles to fix any lost parts. Radars keep the entire area on lockdown so I can ensure no stray Biter nests find their way into my domain.

This causes attacks to become incredibly rare (about once every hour at most). Any damage is fixed in an instant, and thanks to the supply buffer destroyed items are zero issue. You can basically leave your Nauvis factory running in perpetuity with a stealth setup.
Is the OP talking about attacks caused by nest forming in the pollution cloud or nest forming around there outer perimeter

Although from prior game with rampant, i made spokes that went out of my far outer perimeter and used an artillery train to do the rounds for nest clearing if needed.

New nests forming in the previously cleared perimeter area. Whether or not that includes the new nests getting into the cloud is unknown. Even without pollution, once things get crowded even expansion parties get to making regular attacks on the wall.

This second part is more of what I was talking about. When I made this post, I was on vlucanus, and my factory was shut down on Nauvis, so it had zero pollution, but I was starting to get attacks on my walls just from nests expanding at an exponential rate and start crowding my factory to the point where they were starting to nest really close to my walls. That led me to wonder how others were solving this issue, so I made this post.

Once you’re on Vulcanus, you can unlock artillery. this might seem like a huge investment, but personally, I have upgraded artillery range up to level 9 (when it costs more than 100k science) and then move artillery shells and everything else back to Nauvis. This way, the artillery clears the map automatically.

And for bug defence i use the patern :
X-X-X-
-X-X-X
X-X-X-
for wall with a double layer of laser turrets behind it.

However, this is not great advice, as you can realistically set this up only once you know the game very well, the previous advice are more relevant

edit: the double layer of laser turret is more than enough, but you need high level tech for it (and energy), this is why it is not a good advice for players that take their time
