Nests don't spawn as much as spread by sending out scouts to form new camps, but yeah, it's the "nibbling at your walls" part that is the problem. That's easy to deal with if you are on the planet, but if you are on a different planet, it becomes more difficult, and you have to either have turrets at all points of your wall (very resource intensive if you build a very spread out wall as you suggested) or use a tank from remote to go and deal with the problem.
In all seriousness though. I had a bigger base before the expansion that we also walled off (I played with friends) and that had robo ports and lasers around the entire perimeter to keep the biters away. As long as nothing gets inside your walls no new nests will spawn.
Sure it's resource intensive, but Factorio lets you automate tons of stuff. Even walls, flame throwers and laser turrets by the thousands or even tens of thousands is doable.
As soon you get a Spidertron up and running, you never have to go back.
I made my walls in a way that no new nest expansion can happen within my "territory".
This causes attacks to become incredibly rare (about once every hour at most). Any damage is fixed in an instant, and thanks to the supply buffer destroyed items are zero issue. You can basically leave your Nauvis factory running in perpetuity with a stealth setup.
Although from prior game with rampant, i made spokes that went out of my far outer perimeter and used an artillery train to do the rounds for nest clearing if needed.
New nests forming in the previously cleared perimeter area. Whether or not that includes the new nests getting into the cloud is unknown. Even without pollution, once things get crowded even expansion parties get to making regular attacks on the wall.
This second part is more of what I was talking about. When I made this post, I was on vlucanus, and my factory was shut down on Nauvis, so it had zero pollution, but I was starting to get attacks on my walls just from nests expanding at an exponential rate and start crowding my factory to the point where they were starting to nest really close to my walls. That led me to wonder how others were solving this issue, so I made this post.
Once you’re on Vulcanus, you can unlock artillery. this might seem like a huge investment, but personally, I have upgraded artillery range up to level 9 (when it costs more than 100k science) and then move artillery shells and everything else back to Nauvis. This way, the artillery clears the map automatically.
And for bug defence i use the patern :
X-X-X-
-X-X-X
X-X-X-
for wall with a double layer of laser turrets behind it.
However, this is not great advice, as you can realistically set this up only once you know the game very well, the previous advice are more relevant
edit: the double layer of laser turret is more than enough, but you need high level tech for it (and energy), this is why it is not a good advice for players that take their time
