How big is the map?
I read its a million tiles in each direction? What about the other planets? Are they equally vast? How far out have you gone and what was it like?

its 2000x2000 chunks by default, find out how much a chunk is and you have your answer.

Why have you limited your map to such a small size?

Most of us have a map over 62k x 62k chunks.

I would expect they didn't make different map limits for the other planets. So 2 million tiles edge to edge, both ways, for all planets. You won't ever be able to explore all that anyway, since your computer is going to grind to a halt long before you get there (I'm talking about revealing the whole map here)

Depends, do we include other planets, and what about space, and what's the measurement?

Wrong. It's 2 000 000 tiles by 2 000 000 tiles. In-world, 2000 km by 2000 km.

How about, "15,000 hours and counting"? Hours is a good measure, right. Right?

I was wondering where the 2k thought came from. Didn't think about km.

It's a bit like minecraft where it generates chunks when needed, and the size is ultimately limited by numerical precision constraints. Except that factorio uses fixed point(instead of floating point) for coordinates iirc, and as consequence doesn't have the "farlands" phenomenon.

He "explored" a tiny narrow strip one way. A small fraction of a percent. For practical purposes map is infinitely large. Even uncovering entire thing would put any computer on it's knees, nevermind doing anything with that space.

He went in a single direction, he didn't explore the whole map. So yes, you will never explore the whole map, it's just not practically feasible. Even people with biggest megabases would uncover only around 1% of all the available terrain (probably not even that much). That's how big the whole map is.

And that's why reading comprehension matters.

Yeah, Dosh's rig was wheezing just to get that one tiny strip of land to the edge, He 'explored' like, what, An 8 chunk tall area from center to edge, 128 tiles, so he explored 128 million tiles, ish, plus what he explored setting up and getting resources to his megabase, i'll round up to 150million. Heck, be EXTRA generous and say he explored 200 million.

He explored 200~ million tiles.... Out of 4 Quadrillion.

He explored just 0.000005% of the map.

That's a quite small number...
