If there is an unseen land connection to you they can and will use that, though. Also, the nest might have been an offspring by a completely different biter colony.
That's your problem. They cannot cross a 1 tile wide gap. But Spawners can spawn bugs about 5 tiles around the nest. They simply spawn on the other side. See it as some kind of biter quantum tunneling
You've shown a single small point of your defensive perimeter, this doesn't tell anybody anything. Biters can't make it through water, there is no known issue (as far as I am aware) of biters teleportation across water or something similar, and based on every single other thing people know about this game what you're describing is not possible. So, the most logical conclusion is still that you have missed a segment through which biters can make it through your defensive wall. Or you have missed one of the nests on the inside completely and it keeps sending out new biter expansions. Or something else. At any rate, it's up to you to find what you're missing and correct for it so you don't get biter expansions where you don't want them to be.
In the end it's a very simple question. What do you think is more likely: that you're simply making a mistake and not seeing something, or that you've just found a one-of-a-kind bug in a game this old and polished that seemingly nobody knows anything about? Stop looking for nebulous explanations to something that is most certainly a simple mistake on your part somewhere that can be easily solved by finding it and correcting it.
Somewhere in the Beta they added "shallow water"
And there are only 2 types of water, shallow or deep
If i look at your Screenshot, you see 2 types of watercolor, the brighter one therefore must be shallow water
and it looks like it connects between island (atleast it looks like that in the screenshot you provided)
Biters can definitly cross shallow water, always could

There are at least 4. Swamp, Shallow, regular and deep. The map generator does not generate shallow water or Swamp. The first two are provided for custom scenarios and use in mods.
i see that it is written there, but i dunno why, i'm pretty sure you find shallow water in normal games
