bro do the bugs ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ swim?
seriously. have that one spot where the bugs' nest is separated from my base by like 3 blocks of water. and for the third time already they manage to somehow swim over and make a nest on my base while i'm not looking. what the hell?

Bugs can't swim.

If there is an unseen land connection to you they can and will use that, though. Also, the nest might have been an offspring by a completely different biter colony.
Zhardoz Nov 2, 2024 @ 2:09am
Like he said. This is why you need, later on to make some wall around you "not polluted" area with defences. Then they cannot "colonise" inside your territory.

That's your problem. They cannot cross a 1 tile wide gap. But Spawners can spawn bugs about 5 tiles around the nest. They simply spawn on the other side. See it as some kind of biter quantum tunneling

I know what you all are saying but no, my base is totally walled and lasered off everywhere. There's no nests that somehow got inside and the spawners definitely can't spawn the biters right in my base straight through the water - they're just too far. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3358727311

there is a connection, this is only shallow water you can pass, you only can't pass the deep water (deeper blue)

They don't swim. I've seen them glitch through single tile wide water blocks though. Nut that involved the Rampant mod so probably something to do with it.

You've shown a single small point of your defensive perimeter, this doesn't tell anybody anything. Biters can't make it through water, there is no known issue (as far as I am aware) of biters teleportation across water or something similar, and based on every single other thing people know about this game what you're describing is not possible. So, the most logical conclusion is still that you have missed a segment through which biters can make it through your defensive wall. Or you have missed one of the nests on the inside completely and it keeps sending out new biter expansions. Or something else. At any rate, it's up to you to find what you're missing and correct for it so you don't get biter expansions where you don't want them to be.

In the end it's a very simple question. What do you think is more likely: that you're simply making a mistake and not seeing something, or that you've just found a one-of-a-kind bug in a game this old and polished that seemingly nobody knows anything about? Stop looking for nebulous explanations to something that is most certainly a simple mistake on your part somewhere that can be easily solved by finding it and correcting it.

you can't pass it. just checked. It's just "water". As it states on the factoriopedia, the "shallow water" is much lighter in color. (since when is there even shallow water in the game? I haven't ever seen it.)

Somewhere in the Beta they added "shallow water"
And there are only 2 types of water, shallow or deep
If i look at your Screenshot, you see 2 types of watercolor, the brighter one therefore must be shallow water
and it looks like it connects between island (atleast it looks like that in the screenshot you provided)
Biters can definitly cross shallow water, always could

They just can't. i just checked again by aggroing them and quickly jetpacking back to my base island.

the second option doesn't sound too absurd, considering we recently got a huge update that could bring in some bugs.
Yader Nov 2, 2024 @ 3:45am
I swear this is something on the game's part. everything is walled off here, no nests inside no nothing. (only sending this part of my defence since the bugs only appeared here)

According to https://wiki.factorio.com/Water the walkable shallow water isn't generated by the map generator, only by using the map editor.

There are at least 4. Swamp, Shallow, regular and deep. The map generator does not generate shallow water or Swamp. The first two are provided for custom scenarios and use in mods.

i see that it is written there, but i dunno why, i'm pretty sure you find shallow water in normal games

Ok. Your initial description made it sound like that.
