You land first empty handed, then send items down from the platform afterwards.
If you took a landing pad and send that down first, then place it (no power needed), items from the platform will land in the landing pad instead of on the ground. otherwise they land on the ground close to you.
With the landing pad, you can also set up requests for items, and if they are on the platform, they will automatically be brought down.
The landing pad also acts like a giant logistics storage chest, so once you've set up bots, they can take directly from the landing pad.
My recommendation is to first send your landing pad and place it so that all cargo sent to that planet in the future will land there. Also, make sure to not be on on the spawn point (the place you first landed at) when sending any cargo before placing the landing pad, any cargo sent will land there and if it lands on you it will kill you.
