Base game worth it for new player?
I can't afford both this and space age. Is it worth grabbing just the base game?

Yes. People spent literal thousands of hours on the base game, and 2.0 improved the base as well. Space Age is a great addition, but hardly mandatory.

I would even recommend to buy the base game first. Not only will you see if it's a game that you like, but Space Age content is much more challenging for a new player than the base game. So you can consider the base game as a sort of "tutorial" into mechanics of Factorio as well.

And then you can buy Space Age when and if you want it.

Currently the base game has way more content than just the expansion, as the base game was already out for many years, so there exist like a dozen or so full overhaul mods for it , which greatly increase the potential replay value. Meanwhile the expansion is brand new, so there aren't any for it yet. So Space Age only offers one unique new playthrough and while certainly being a very good one, it's stilll just a single one versus the many other runs the base game could offer, which also often are much more complex than the expansion.

Try the Demo first, if that grabs you then you can buy the base game, play that for a few hundred hours, grab mods and play those for a few hundred more, and only then should you think about whether or not you want the expansion.
In my opinion, of course.

There is a problem with a demo, where it gives a wrong impression that Factorio is a puzzle game with separate missions. You must know that the main game mode is the "freeplay" with only loosely set goal of launching a rocket/escaping the solar system, somewhat like Minecraft with its 'goal' of beating the ender dragon.

For example, CohhCarnage was under this wrong impression for the last N years after playing several 'tutorial' missions, until he played Satisfactory. So if you never played factory building games before, you might not understand the nature of this game from the demo alone.

This game is awesome.

'Worth it' is a personal call. Worth it for someone else isn't worth it for another. The only one who can decide if it's worth it is you.

This is exactly why the tutorial falls down. I recommend the first couple of scenarios for basic controls, and then skipping the rest and going straight to freeplay.

Try the demo and if you like it go for the base game, I think the DLC have so many advanced thing it can get frustrating for new players. the DLC will always be there if you ever want more.

I didn't like the demo due to enemies being too quick to jump in when I was learning.

Kk thank you people, I bought the base game.

Enjoy it! FYI I recommend not turning enemies off for your first game, your call of course; they aren't as quickly aggressive in the full game as the tutorial, and a sizable amount of the tech tree is useless if they aren't on. Playing on default settings gives you a reference point for what you'll want to turn off in the future.

What do you think everybody has been playing before the expansion came out?
SonOfMyst Oct 31, 2024 @ 9:39am
If you can only afford one, DEFINITELY buy the expansion XD XD XD
