You Steam purchase includes full access to their web site and content. In their version of the game updates can be completely disabled.
Steam's version can be 'locked' to specific versions using the 'beta' version option. How well that works and what other effects it has, however, are beyond me as I briefly investigated it and then went with the other option.
One big point, however, is the blueprint library. If you have saved any game with the new version the older version will refuse to read the library. There is "help" for that, but it can be a bit tricky and is best dealt with IF you need it. Just remember to keep an older save of the game untouched by the new version of the installed game.
Steam only allows a limited number of 'beta' versions, so only the more recent (stable) versions are available this way.
They'll probably dedicate a slot to the last 1.x releases once 2.0 has dropped.
plus we can still get every stable beta back to the 0.12 - so it would be weird if 1.x was retired any time before 2030 lol :-)
OP - check the version on your save - if it is since 1.1.87 then you will likely find the stable version you want in the betas menu - and you can lock to that till you finish your game
Once downloaded from the website, no matter which version is used, it can be locked to that for as long as the computer remains functional. The beta option, from my understanding, keeps changing what is available, and the 2.0 update just might clear out many of the currently available 1.1.x versions.
My general advice is that the more important the replay is the more the non-Steam option ought to be pursued. Of course, both options can be used. Keep the Steam version locked as long as possible. If Steam changes the options then the WUBE version can be used as a fall-back.
As an extra step, for the one game I want to keep the replay save useful for, I have saved the install file for version 1.1.107 in the same place I have the savegame stored. Even after the release of 2.1 or the loss of Steam's services, I can still load the replay.
