If you place modules into a building then copy that building with a blueprint, there's an option to copy the modules with it.
This marks the newly placed building for module delivery.

Not sure how to do it with an already existing building automatically though...

Through blueprints you can do that, but they won't change existing modules if there were already different ones in the machine.

Just copy a building that already has the module slotted. Copy or create a new blueprint. Then click that blueprint over existing building and it will call for construction bots to fit existing builds with modules.

There's a mod called "Module Inserter". Works like the upgrade planner, you can specify what modules you want in certain machines (factories/modules/etc), then click and drag over the machines you want the modules to go in and your robots will insert them if available.

You do not have to put any modules in your factories, let your beacons do their work and fill them up with modules. Dunno bout for inserters though.

That doesn't work, or at least won't for me.

It indeed doesn't work. Or ever worked. You can't imprint a blueprint on top of another one to change the pending module requests. Vyndicu was mistaken with that piece of advice.

If you want to modify the modules in a blueprinted building, you have to actually delete the blueprinted building first, and then place back down the updated blueprint.

Necro'd post (2021), and I made a mistake when I originally posted it.

Copying an existing build with modules slotted and placing a new ghost does work in the way I described it, especially after deleting and then placing a blueprint right afterward.

Edit: Way to make me feel ignored.

Neither does the upgrade planner. You have to do as RiO suggested.

This worked for me, thanks!

In 1.1, you will need mods to insert modules into existing buildings.

In 2.0, you can make an upgrade planner blueprint, and upgrade a building to itself with modules. Press Alt-U to create an upgrade planner blueprint, place it in your inventory, and then right click it, the rest is easy to figure out.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
