Fire will delete the tree. You can use fire will clear out most of a forest, but it takes time and IIRC won't get absolutely everything.
I hear some people use poison weapons?
If you just need to get through a forest, the tank can just drive through it no problem. Or a spidertron can go over it.
Once you have bots they can do precision removal for blueprints, if you like. They, however, like to bring home the wood, which is its own storage and disposal problem. Grenades don't have the same problem.
But my favorite are poison capsules. They remove trees in a good radius, you'd need about 6 unupgraded grenades to do the same work as 1 capsule. They also have the advantage of not damaging machines or rails or anything, so they are a bit smarter than grenades in what they target. They are pretty cheap, when you consider their area of effect.
Fire is very cheap, you can burn down 5k trees with a single flamethrower ammo in a dense forest. The thing is, it will always leave some burnt trees standing.
Okay, it really was not that great. But still, it's funny to try to remember what the game was like when I first played it. And now I'm waiting for the game's expansion. Quite a journey.
...except for some pesky trees who only loose their leaves.

Get in a car, even better a tank, and drive through.
When bots are available, to get rid of trees in places like around, if not even inside, of your base, click on the red spare de construction planner, while holding it, EITHER open inventory, and set it in any empty slot OR set on in the quick access free space (bottom central screen). Hover over to see instruction how to open. Tick the option of "trees and rocks only". Have fun after.
And yes, they are the true enemies.
Due to mass amounts you waste precious storage space, either to store them to use as fuel, or to store as many as possible and destroy said container to get rid of them.
Bots, without mods, are limited, so the further you expend, the more you need to somehow fit roboport, electricity poles, and of course, anything to protect against bitter, + avalable storage unless you want to see them bots flying allll the way back and front, reducing avalable bots OR having to may bots that might cause FPS drop. All this, repeat each time you wish to expend, reach new resources location.
Whenever you want to build something new, sometimes therenis 1 thin tree you did not notice, so now you need to interrupt whatever you where invested to accomplish to cut down a few trees (repeat this experience for at least 100 times and tell me then how it's no issue to get rid of a mere tree or two).
And lastly, hides smaller rocks or cliffs. Did you ever drive to clear the path only to crash in something, wasting your time further? No? Enjoy the privilege of not knowing. Similar, creating a train track path (rails), via force construction.....only halfway through to realise said path goes through a cliff and you don't have cliff explosives yet. So redo whatever you planed.
Bitter nest surround by trees make them hard to attack (assuming no talk or other OP ways)
Just adding: fores fire creates mass pollution, so you can't always burn them. And opposite, trees absorb pollution, aka reduce bitter attacks.
Btw, If you never want trees and rock, install mods, there are some that prevent them being generated at all.
Of course, also new game, no trees is another solution, though I still don't understand why the devs never added the option for no rocks
