is there a version of the Rampant mod that isnt ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?
Its really anoying of constantly having entire alien bases spawn right at your base but I really liked the new enemies that are added.

Rampant doesn't change how expansion works, so if they managed to make a new nest too close it means you allowed them to get there unhindered.

If it's the nest expansion that is bothering you, there is also an option to disable those when creating a map, and there is a mod that allows you to change those map settings mid-game as well.

I should mention I was using the "rampent, fixed" mod because according to reddit it was the fixed version to use. Was I using the wrong one this whole time? Because they legit spawned whole bases right behind me sometimes

Can I assume that you are well versed in vanilla's nest expansion mechanisms and the map refresh (or lack of it) of chunks not covered by radar or your own proximity?

Also keep in mind that if you enabled them, flying enemies can go over your walls or bodies of water, making them entirely capable of bypassing an outer wall if given the opportunity.

Not sure about the differences between the two, the "normal" rampant has not updated in 8 months so it is possible it would have had something broken by an update in between but there doesn't seem to be a flood of bug reports in the discussion tab of its page so not sure.
The fixed version should be fine since it seems that they just fixed a few issues but didn't change how the mod works.

I play with the fixed version. It clearly has (in settings - mods) options for enemies to be agresive from start (check or this is the reason), peaceful mod for X minutes (you can change x to how long). I quickly did a sandbox mod, and sure enough, just like others pointed out, you can adjust from there. Also, enemy migrating. On this note, there is another option in settings, one that if enabled, enemies will try and conquer the whole map

I did that but it still happened. Even put it on easy. Weird, maybe its another mod causing conflicts.

Well, first off, Rampant DID change how biters expand, they won't stop at occupied chunks.
Secondly, there is also a "pheromone" system that tracks your very movement so you might have attracted a hoard unknowingly.
But whatever it is, I am sure there is a setting for it because Rampant has a metric sh1tton of it. And there are lot's of things working differently in RampantFixed (not always to the best) so read decriptions, changelogs and settings carefully.

Urgh why is moddin factorio so annoying and why do modders never explain anything

Annoying? all you have to do is download the mod in game and enable it. There are dozens of settings for rampant to tweak to your liking and everything is explained in their mod portal

Well, most of OP's top played games that support modding (most of them in fact) are very basic in their modding support, so you can only play mods as-is and compatibility between mods is tricky at best on top of using steam's workshop (forcefully updating mods).

In comparison, factorio has a lot of smaller mods, even large mods are cut in chunks.
Most mods pick some default values but let you change quite a few through options.
It can end up feeling weird when you are not used to proper modding support and it can also be a bit overwhelming with mods like rampant that have a ton of options.

I guess I will try out the normal rampant version and double check the settings

Rampant makes enemies smarter, they could go around your defenses if they can and for example eat the powerlines so that inserters can't put more ammo in your turrets.

In vanilla there is a way to track where enemy hives are using the F4 key. You can toggle the expansion candidate chunks for showing. Maybe they really didn't expand from outside your walls, but you never actually cleared the insides though you might think you did. That debug view will confirm it.

is there somewhere i can go to see the difference between the original mod and the 'fixed' version? i don't quite follow the differences, and the mod portal pages don't help me much

i play with the original one
