What would be the point? Do you think that itch.io can reach more customers than Steam?

What would be the point to bother to develop Factorio to OSX and Linux users? yet they did it.

I still don't follow - who are these people supposedly unable to buy the game from Steam or directly from the factorio.com website?

You own a copy of the game so who are you advocating on behalf of?
``;..;´´ 2020 年 12 月 18 日 下午 12:48
Why you don't follow? if you are talking about "reach more customers on steam" when the user base on Steam from OSX and Linux are less than 5%, yet was developed to work on those platform, is the same point.

Either way, is the end user decision to install linux, enjoin a game in their OS and manage their games library with itch.io store. I think is a valid question. Why not? :D unless is a pain in the neck to publish the game on that store I would understand.

I think you are asking the question on the wrong forum. Go to the factorio.com boards and ask there.

I'm not a dev but my guess would be the legal and pricing requirements of the itch.io may be a sticking point as well as their political stance. Wube seems to be apolitical and their game development strategy seems to be directly opposite that of itch.io

Or the devs may simply have overlooked that site but the Wube people seem to be on top of things so I doubt it.

Did you might consider the contract that people have with steam when they publish a game on it?

I am not sure, if thats a thing or not - But just consider it! The devs of Factorio may not be legally allowed to publish it on another 3rd party platform.

And did you really compare Linux compatibility with another 3rd party platform?
That are independent actions that have nothing do to with each other. Maybe the devs had no problem porting the game to Linux as it would be a click of a button. Or the devs wanted Linux to be incorporated as Linux gaming becomes more and more a thing over time.

I went to that site and cold not find a game above $20 and factorio is €25, and many of the games there have a "pay what you like" policy while factorio has a "never sale" policy, so not a surprise that it's not on that site.

@knighttemplar1960 What do you mean? can you elaborate on that?

@Ventoxing I hope there is not any contract on steam forcing a game dev to not publish his game on other store. Yes you right, the dev use technologies that works on linux, yet you need to allocate dev time to assure that work exactly on any OS.

@Headning yes there is games more that $20, there is games with a minimum price, that is actually the game price. I never thought the price was a thing.

@knighttemplar1960 What do you mean? can you elaborate on that?

I am merely guessing but if itch.io has any pricing requirements that must be followed by the organizations that use them that could make what you are looking for a no go on Wube's behalf.

itch.io is a geographically distributed organization (no home country for the organization) but Leaf Corcoran is from San Fransisco, CA, USA and supports pollitical causes exclusively in the USA. Wube is headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic. I'm not from there so I don't know their laws governing international distribution requirements but it is possible that itch.io may run afoul of Czech laws on distribution.

itch.io uses a pay what you want model and Wube for Factorio has been adamant from the start that the price is $30 US period end of quote and will never go on sale.

itch.io sponsors game jams. Wube spent literal years perfecting Factorio. Totally opposite programming styles.

itch.io is very active in support of political causes. They organized the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality in June 2020 in support of the George Floyd protests. The bundle raised $8.1M and was donated to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Community Bail Fund. Wube is apolitical. They don't donate to any political organization or get involved in politics of any kind. (Local, national or international).

You are looking at business models, programming styles, and political activism that are essentially diametrical opposites. It comes as no surprise to me that Factorio is not available on itch.io and I doubt (but could be surprised) that it will be any time in the near future.

anyway, op, what would be the benefits from buying the game from that store instead of the devs website (full money to support those waesome devs) or steam(all the steam functionalitys; i bought it on steam because that's actualy the first place where i discovered that awesome game (steam suggested that game to me when i was lookign around for somethign that i could like on the store))?

@knighttemplar1960 thanks for you comment. I didn't knew that about itch.io, actually recently I read about the game Devotion that was removed from Steam and GOG because the chinese government don't want the game to be sold, politics related too, well more cersorship I think. If by chance you are curious https://twitter.com/GOGcom/status/1339227388438306817 there is a entrance on wikipedia too look for "Devotion_(video_game)". Returning to you reply, maybe you right about business model and all that.

@tom hey, ah well I like itch.io (however I did not knew what knighttemplar1960 said), yes I bought factorio years ago to support the development. Well I prefer to buy some games from one store that other, like steam for multiplayer games, but sometimes a found good deals on other store.

My question was for the dev or someone that have some clue, I don't think I will login or register to the factorio forum or write some post there anytime soon :D
Hedning 2020 年 12 月 21 日 下午 12:52
lol, what could Wube possibly have against itch.io giving to charity? The civil rights protests following the murder of George Floyd was kind of a big deal in the United States. Lots of corporations donated to related causes then. imo that doesn't even make them political or you should consider Target, Walmart, Apple, Amazon and EA games (just to name a few) political as well.

Also if you refuse to work with someone because they donated to a civil rights charity then that's making a political statement. If Wube was apolitical then they would not discriminate against publishers based on politics.
