No, the game is not like tower-defense. It though mixes some aspects of this genre into the game.

If you are looking for a straight forward TD-Game I am sure Factorio is not what you are searching for.

the games basicly: you just wanna play more and more until it takes everything you have but it's just never enough.

The best way to defend your base is with towers ... and there are monsters that often like to attack in waves ...
and this is after which the similarity with Tower Defense games ends ;)

If you want tower defense I'd look elsewhere, this game's main draw and most addicting quality is building factories, figuring out how to run efficently, get more resources, transport said resources and so on. It turns into a very interesting brain puzzle you can spend hours on.

And when you need a break from that you take all those resources you got and go blow up your very annoying eco-hipster neighbors.
