You can't drain everything though - the maps are infinite big.
The rest... Well then you need to reach farer but that is why trains are there. Im currently playing with a mod that gives you bigger ore/oil veins the farer you go from the spawn point which allows me to expand slower and slower with the distance i get because the veins i find is bigger with the distance.
I like the sound of that mod. What's it called?
Any indication the developer is going to add more ores into the game? I'm playing vanilla at the moment but can see the attraction of different ores which would force me to stop being a turtle, plus give a reason to build trains.
Biter and resource generation is a bit boring ATM -- It uses a fairly simple perlin noise generator with simple threshold cutoffs, so it tends to encourage turtling in one base versus expanding everywhere and exploring.
I haven't explored resource generation mods but I think I will, to see if I can make the game fresh to me.
If you set enemy bases to "very large", then turtling is out of the question. They will literaly be EVERYWHERE.
Even though the mineral chunks each state something like ~3000 iron, the e-mining drill will say "Expected resources: 111k".
That is because each specific ore tile has that much ore (~3000 in your case) in that one tile. but electric miners cover 3x3 tiles, with a 5x5 tile mining spot. So a 5x5 spot covers 25 tiles underneath it, giving you 3000x25=75,000 ore from the one miner.
I usually pack in my miners as close as they can get, so a deposit depletes as fast as possible, even if they take ore from other miners nearby (overlapping digging radius).
