This is a free publicly accessible demo. It contains only a subset of what is already available in the alpha. Purpose of the demo is to teach the very basic game mechanics and let the player decide whether he / she is interested in more.

You can either download the Demo directly from the store page (there will be a button on the store-page, even though the widget below shows the full price)

Stable Version[www.factorio.com]

The stable version has fewer features than the "experimental version", however it contains no (known) bugs.

Experimental Version (currently unavailable)[www.factorio.com]

The experimental version has more features than the "stable version". There might be some nasty bugs. Use on your own risk. Your computer probably won't explode though :).

Since the tiny update I get an error at startup:
"Failed to create OpenGL context: Failed creating OpenGL context at version requested"

Now I'm hesitating to buy the full game because I suspect that won't work either

Just FYI I only have the demo and mine is fine after the update (just tried it). So it's maybe something hardware related to perhaps GFX?

So happy they offered free demo. I prob wouldn't have bought the game, but after 13h in, I can't wait to start my full version :)

Hey there, I have tried the demo out recently, but when I came back later in the day and tried reopening it, it crashed. In fact it crashed the same way the maybe five times I tried playing it, and I even uninstalled and reinstalled it before trying two of those times. Really a shame as I would enjoy going through the full demo. Too bad I can't upload the dump files here, but here is a bit of the text that might help someone see what the issue is:

From Steam. I have read some posts from a few years back saying there are issues with it, but it is really odd that it had absolutely no issues for ~4.5 hours and only had issues when I tried playing later that day. Plus I had not seen recent comments (From even the last two years) about it.

Maybe a corrupt save?
I've been back in a few times still with a view to buy, just trying to persuade some mates so we can coop.

I should have noted that it crashed when I tried opening the Demo itself, not a save or anything else, so it seems like it wouldn't be a corrupt save given the game can't even open at all past maybe a 41% loaded screen.

1) go to your Steam library > right-click Factorio > Properties > click “Set launch options”. Type “–force-opengl” and press OK.

If ni luck try 2) go to C:\user\”your username”\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\Config. Copy the “config.ini” file and then delete it.
