can an i7 7700k run this WITHOUT a GPU?
my card died

looking for games to pass the time until 30 series prices are announced and i can make a more informed decision on which card to get

You appear to own the game so you could try it. The specs imply a discrete graphics card is required though.

According to some quick research I just did, you may be fine.

That totally depends on your machine and chipset.. But, they list Intel graphics as playable.. But not recommended. It should work, it might be painful.

It works, like it works on my old Laptop with a HD4600 (4th gen Intel). But the Intel iGPU will eat much of the RAM bandwidth.
And Factorio is mostly memory latency bound. So you’ll find that rendering on the iGPU will severely impact the game simulation performance. On my Laptop, I got 60 UPS while watching the map, and 30+ UPS while running around normally (zoomed out, in the middle of my factory).

Maybe get a used GPU for 10 bucks somewhere. As long as it has 1-2 GB VRAM, it’ll be fine. Ask a friend, if they have some spare parts in the shelf you could borrow.

Why would it "wreck your CPU"? If it won't run, then you'll get an error message, nothing more.

An iGPU should be okay especially newer ones, might want to lower the graphics settings but should be okay for a while. Factorio is mostly CPU focused anyway.

A couple of years ago I tried running Factorio on my i7 6700k, was my experience was that it does not run well at all (single digit FPS when large fields of active accumulators were in view). You probably should get a graphics card.

I run the game on a 7 years old wrinkled potato: i5-4670, iGPU, 8GB RAM;
nevertheless I can have HR sprites, animated trees and water and have 60 fps most of the time in my midgame factory.

It's a game, not a stress test. And even stress tests can't wreck hardware. Worst case scenario the game would run poorly or crash.

cant they wreck hardware if ran for prolonged periods of time every day ?

Modern CPUs are designed with thermal protection: They will throttle themselves if cooling is not sufficient.

However, if you ran your CPU with insufficient cooling or (EEK!!) no cooling, it may be damaged anyway. The software cannot damage your CPU, but if you didn't carefully build your PC you may be the cause of the issue.

Only thing you can wreck is voltage regulators on motherboards if you run heavy compute tasks / stress tests over very prolonged periods of time.
But you will NEVER achieve this running normal games and the like, so unless you plan on running stuff like Folding@home at full power all day long, then you are safe.
Yeah probably, the game has been extensively optimized to the point where it will run on just about anything (maybe not optimally tho).

Why don't you fire it up and check? Would be interesting to know.

My take on waiting for RTX 30 series; I run an ROC RTX2080Ti 11GB overclocked, and play all my games in 4K Ultra, and this card hardly breaks a sweat, never getting close to 60Deg C, even when playing GTA V Online. Still, one of my friends has the GTX1080Ti 6GB, and he also plays everything in 4K Ultra, no issues. The 30 series will be prohibitively expensive at launch, unless you have plenty of loot to burn. The 2080 I believe, is future proof for at least the next 3 to 5 years, I might consider upgrading to 30 series then, maybe.

That is another issue to consider, unless you are intending to shell out big money and buy it at launch and are waiting for the midrange... Don't bother, it will be a long wait.
Better get something today and use it until it is too outdated, that will be what will serve you the best today anyway.
Because the mid range cards will lag behind the top model for quite some time after launch.
