Factorio Demo
umm I think I'm doing stuff right, but this demo, while well-intended, still feels very confusing lol.

Are you meant to replay the demo several times or just sink your teeth into the main game and figure things out by trial and error.

Just jump into the main game. The demo is a tutorial of sorts.

I looked at the demo and then 5 minutes later bought the game, but I have played many similar games so it may be better for some to try a tutorial first.

And try not to watch any videos/guides before launching your first rocket completely on your own.

even now after 1600+ hours of play i still tend to avoid videos because i still want to figure out better designs for myself - i tend to watch speedruns for my fix of factorio content because those designs are often specific for that kind of play (or they paste down massive blueprints and so i don't have time to get too many ideas while they run around) - or i watch stuff and skip the episodes where they cover an aspect for which i haven't fully sorted out my designs

but the content is there is you want, and the demo is very much a tutorial - but once you get in to the freeplay there's plenty of opportunity to try stuff and retry stuff, and then try again - most of us look back at our early factories and laugh or think "how adorable" when we see the way we squeezed everything close together or had little lines of resources snaking around the base, before we started to build massive

so yeah - if you like the base building and automating production line kind of play then the full game is more of that with a bigger area and more technologies and lots of configurable options for how each game plays

also i can't remember how long it was before i launched my first rocket but it was a long time, because i would often get to a point and think "no, i built it too small" or something like that and go back and start a new game - which was not a bad thing because every new game you start with more knowledge and so the early game always evolves

basically it's just great (in my opinion), and like many people as soon as i played the demo i bought the game, and it was one of the best value purchases i have ever made (in fact when people moan about the price it always seems strange to me, coz if some AAA avengers game or something is worth $60 for maybe a dozen or so hours of entertainment, what price do we put on the 100+ or 1000+ hours that so many have got from factorio)

also can someone remind me, is the demo the whole campaign or just the first 4 levels (up to building the car?)

Edit: the reason i ask is because those 4 levels are very much tutorial, getting a handle on the basics, with a very limited map size and tech tree - whereas level 5 i believe has the standard freeplay map size (so big as to be considered infinite), and so feels a lot more like the regular game - anyway, just wondering - but certainly replaying the car level can give you a bit of a feel for the game, if you take out the biters first and then spend the rest of the time building big - although i suspect (and hear it told) that many had a similar experience to me and knew we liked the game soon after starting the demo, and when we hit the freeplay it was just amazing :-)

It includes level 5, which has a considerably larger map size than the previous levels, but is nowhere infinite. Your task is to automate rail transportation (for ores), then to fill your car with supplies (200 piercing ammo, 200 steel plate, 250 gear wheels, 500 electronic circuit and 200 solar panels). You can keep playing afterwards, the map has ~4m iron ore and ~20m copper ore, you are just limited by the tech tree.

cool - well definitely that's a nice way for the demo to end - really give a feel for the scope of the main game
