Just think of it as adding a big mod to an existing factory, it might work but odds are you would be better off starting a new map with it instead.
We don't exactly know more than that for now and it will not come out any time soon (a year-ish) so why worry about this now?
Knowing WUBE they will do as much as they can to make 1.0 saves compatible with vanilla 2.0, and if they manage that - it would be possible. But it is a HUGE ask and other companies would usually just say "hell naw".
More seriously though, factorio is often more about starting a new map, playing it until you feel like you finished or need to do things differently (vanilla or modded) and start a new map again.
