Will the new expansion break old bases?

If you want to use an existing base to continue it into the expansion it will most likely break some parts of your base due to recipe changes.
Just think of it as adding a big mod to an existing factory, it might work but odds are you would be better off starting a new map with it instead.

We don't exactly know more than that for now and it will not come out any time soon (a year-ish) so why worry about this now?

Because my brain refuses to let me use something whose fate is known to be doomed

They do mention in the FFF that you COULD start a base-game and switch to full SA game in the middle so... hard to tell.

Knowing WUBE they will do as much as they can to make 1.0 saves compatible with vanilla 2.0, and if they manage that - it would be possible. But it is a HUGE ask and other companies would usually just say "hell naw".

Should I point out the irony of that statement coming from an entity that is also doomed to die at some point in the future?

More seriously though, factorio is often more about starting a new map, playing it until you feel like you finished or need to do things differently (vanilla or modded) and start a new map again.

You don't know when the update is coming either

From https://factorio.com/blog/post/fff-373:
"This implies that technically, you could just take your vanilla base, activate the expansion, and continue playing. But the best way to experience it will be to play with Space Age from start to finish. "

I have a general knowledge of when, in about a year
whereas i could die right now of a heart attack, or die in 800 years because immortality juice was invented but a black hole flew through the solar system and destroyed it

While it might not change most of the recipes, it definitely changes tech progression enough to break a lot of stuff. Think for example if your factory already uses tier 3 modules and you activate the expansion where these modules only supposed to be unlocked after travelling to some planet, what is supposed to happen?

You'll still be able to play a vanilla game without the expansion. The expansion won't be required and you'll still get some of the optimizations for the base game even if you don't buy the expansion.

Ok, cool

As far as I'm aware the only thing that will break 100% is the removable of rocket control units as mentioned in the factorio wiki
https://wiki.factorio.com/Upcoming_features
It's in the bottom section "Known free changes for 2.0"

Rocket control units are removed. Rocket parts now take processing units instead.

Necro'd an old thread, but from your link the rails were changed up in 2.0 too:

New rails: Rails have a new texture. The geometry behind rail curves has been redone, allowing for 2 and 4-tile S-bends.
* Trains will still drive on old rails in existing worlds, but old rails can no longer be built by any means, including copy/paste or blueprints.
Fel Oct 16, 2024 @ 3:17pm
The rail curves changing will break some blueprints (any blueprint with rail curves) but the ones already built will still work, so it doesn't really count as breaking old bases in my book.

Blueprints gonna break, new mapgen means the map will be completely mismatched in newly generated chunks... Just start a new game.
