Any way to find lost dropped items?
I lost a train somewhere and I'm assuming it had to do with removing my power armor instead of switching it when I have a full inventory, as has happened already multiple times. Occasionally I will run across a huge pile of walls or something I dropped and never realized. I know its a cheap build and doesn't matter but my brain keeps wanting to confirm where it went because I filled it full of ammo, took it out to the edge to build walls and next thing I know its nowhere.

Anyone know of a trick that works to find dropped items on the map?

Put a filter on a deconstruction planner for items on ground. Then when you paint a box with it it will show a number of items that are inside the box. When you change the shape of the box you can tell when the items were inside/outside of the box and narrow down the location.

Well, deconstruction planner makes the construction bots pickup items on the ground I think, but it also deconstructs your factory.

Just forget about it, make a new one, and at some point in the future have a look at the dead-end portions of belts to see if there are weird items there (if not it's probably on the ground somewhere and you won't find it).

Not if you put a filter on it. Besides you do not actually have to "deconstruct" anything. You are just using the numbers the deconstruction planner shows while you are selecting the area and when you locate your items you cancel.

Items spilled from the inventory when your invetory shrinks do not end up on belts. They did in the past but people really did not like it so they made the items spilled this way avoid belts at all costs.

Oh, last time I spilled items near belts it was still putting them wherever it found space but good to know it changed.

just so OP knows - if you press Q while dragging out a deconstruction planner it will deselect it (i.e. cancel) without marking anything for deconstruction

also - if you accidentally mark anything for deconstruction - you can shift click when dragging a deconstruction planner to cancel deconstruction for anything inside the selected area

you can also use the deconstruction planner from the map screen if you want to cover a big area

Good points. Also I am not sure if the trick works in areas that are not under the lit up visible area of a radar or player.

Ok I give up, how to you filter with the deconstruction planner? I can only see how to turn it on for selection or off.

you have to select it from the sidebar - then open your inventory and left click to drop it in there

you can then right click to interact with it

Your "thanks" is appreciated. I help people on these forums mainly to pass time but being thanked really does put a smile on my face.

Thanks for the compliment. And thanks for explaining the things the engineer didn't think to explain.

The only thing that has made me smile more than this thread this week was when our dog offered her paw for a pawshake as thanks for giving her a bowl full of diced and fried moose. Put any other food in the bowl and she will eat only when she gets hungry but moose meat is gone by the time you come back from filling her waterbowl. And she deserves every bite and lick of it. And now I'm rambling and it's almost midnight and I should have gone to sleep hours ago.

As long as there aren't too many engineers. Two or three and you can get amazing stuff. If it is a big project you might benefit from 5 to 10. But put twenty in the same team and your bridge collapses before the workers finish building it.

It's a bit gamy but dogs love that. I usually mix some pork in it if I'm eating it myself. But now I really have press the power button or else it's going to be 5am before I realize so good night.

lol - even when i wrote it i was fighting my inner control freak that has to fight to trust that work done by others has been done properly :-)

and yeah - depending on the size of the project it needs the right amount of people and the right spread of people

and hopefully not too many people that will always be 100% certain that they are correct - even when they aren't :-)
