Serious Question! Fun or Addictive?
Factorio has been showing up on my Discovery queue for years. Watched it from early access thru release an on and on to today. Every time it pops up I seriously consider buying it except I am conflicted about whether its my type of game and would I enjoy it.

I'm into builder games, cities, railroads, some 4X games, Civilization, GalCiv to name a few. Then again not all - even some of the most popular like Space Engineer, Kerbal Space Program which are super popular I just can't stand.

Over time I've determined that there are two kinds of builder games: those that are fun and those that are addictive (the just one more turn kind). So far I haven't found one in my 44 years of PC gaming that is both. :steamsad:

So - here's my question - Is Factorio Fun or Addictive?

For me it's more towards "fun" than "addictive", I have not had issues stopping playing for months or years at a time when it started to no longer be as fun for me.

But it definitely has that "one more turn" thing going for it (not that there are turns here but it's the same thing).
Just going to automate this before I stop, but then there is that to fix, nests to destroy, power to increase, and oh look I just unlocked something, got to quickly automate it as well, which leads to a shortage of other items which needs to be fixed, which requires setting down rails to bring minerals from other locations...
It's quite easy to get lost into it if it clicks with you and you are not careful.

Personally I would say both, but for your own decisionmaking I would refer you to the DEMO of the game that is available and will help inform you about it a lot more than what anyone can write. We're not you, and what we find fun might not be for you, and what we find addictive might not be for you.

So, play the DEMO

depends on the player, but alot of us are all in. to be fair, i'll binge it for a while then come back after a bender with a couple other games.

there's a demo, you'll get a good feel for the game there. the main game is more configurable and moddable to make it what you want if the demo shows you its close enough.

Factorio starts out simple with just you mining and inserting coal, iron and copper in furnaces, but soon you'll figure out that you can automate all of these processes. Your demand for wanting to automate every little thing in your factory will hunger the bigger your factory gets.
It's really exciting to figure out ways of dealing with problems that you have created yourself. As your factory expands from just being an automated smeltery to automating research or robots and so on. You'll realise that you've done so many mistakes in your previous designs and you'll want to come back to them and optimise everything.
I honestly love this game and I can only recommend it.

Factorio is both Fun and Addictive!
They also have a demo you can play to try it out

What's the difference?

Honestly, the only games I ever played that were addictive but not fun were the ones with single very strong element and some very, very bad elements. Factorio ain't one of these.

Space Engineer, Kerbal Space Program - from my experience - can be unfun because of the need to get everything just right and very slim margin of error. Factorio ain't one of these either.

But end of the day it depends what is "fun" to you. And to determine that... well, try the demo :)

I agree with the Comments above.

It is all a matter of perspective from the gamer's part as to either it is "Fun", "Addictive" or "Both".

For me it is "Both".

IT can get tedious in the Beginning but, does get easier as you progress.

So, if you want to see if, Factorio is your "Cup of Tea or Coffee!" Try out the Demo as suggested by others.

I think it is fun because it is addictive, or is it the other way around?

But, How about it is both! :)

This game is easily the best in my library. It's amazingly fun, especially with a few friends in multiplayer (which runs great), and probably the most addicting game I own as well. You'll blink, and suddenly the sun is poking through the windows (has happened to me NUMEROUS times)

fun if you do not work all day looking at code that is more messy then this factory.

Bold emphasis mine...

What's the difference?

The best way to describe it for me is to say I find the Civilization games IV thru VI to be highly addictive which truly makes no sense to me other than that they have a quality that pulls me in once I get going and I find it difficult to stop. JUST ONE MORE TURN thing rears it's ugly head and I move on until I reach a point where the just one more turn thing dies for the day (usually around midnight) and I finally quit. NOT FUN at all - definitely addictive.

Then there's games like Cities Skylines, Sim City 4 and Railroad Empire 1; The Sid Meier Railroad Tycoon games and Medieval Engineers (way fun unlike it's big brother) that I find to be very fun .

I experience joy and sometimes even pride from what has been created with fun - even in failure there is fun. There is no fun in the games I categorize as addictive - it feels like I'm being manipulated to keep on playing by a game designed by a highly competent team of psychologists to keep one playing and playing using techniques that are more akin to god knows what.

I think I'll take y'all's advice and go grab the Demo.

I like many of the same games you play (and also couldn't get into KSP) but this is my absolute favourite with well over 1000 hours. Watch some of Katherine of Sky videos on YouTube as that is what got me into it. Plus, not sure if other feel the same but the open ended games are far more enjoyable than the tutorials albeit they may have changed since I played them during EA.

Hope you buy and enjoy it
