try some games in freeplay you don't intend to finsih and mess about?
the puzzles are quite fun to do ... and most similar I guess ? if and when you solve them ...
else watch this .... she's good at explaining from start to finish in a relaxed way ... even has some blueprint books available but that is cheating although it is your game and you're cheating noone but yourself ... see description for a link to her google drive

The way to do this with a base game is starting a new world in sandbox mode, preparing the area however you want (you can even make the ground look exactly like the one in tutorials), then saving the game. Now, whenever you're playing a normal game and want to test something out, load the sandbox world save and do it. Then you can save whatever you've made as a a blueprint and import it into the normal game.
There are also mods that make this quicker and allow you to instantly load into a test area straight from your current game. If you go down that road I also recommend getting a mod that gives you test machines that produce infinite electricity, infinite item providers that saturate belts, and so on so it is easier to validate your designs.
just getting close like I said
unless you get into modding and scripting deep .. at that point why even do it?
Hey, just returning to say I figured it out! Thought I had to get some mods (honestly still don't know if it did anything) but apparently if you go into Sandbox, open the console and type /editor you can access a menu that lets you do these things:
"Remove all entities"
"Fill with lab tiles"
"Generate New Chunks with lab tiles"
Whether or not the mod Editor Extensions did anything, I don't know, but I'll certainly chase the mods you've explained if I need them!
I'd like to point out this Reddit link, Enaero4828 near the bottom explains how to do it a bit better than me. https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/jw2p9e/building_test_world_set_up/
