Question about storage
About 14 hours into playing it within a week.

Are there bigger storage silos to accomodate bigger stacks of items than the steel chests? Silos would be nice.

Nope
Just convert the base resources into whatever your making then store them
I recommend drones and solar panels

I once had a large rich iron patch that I wanted to clear out so I could place furnaces without worrying about wasting a large resource patch. "I'll just mine it out and store it in chests, and feed those chests through the furnaces!" think I. 200 chests later, cumpletely full of iron ore, and I haven't even had to move the miners off their spots to the rest of the patch, and I looked at the capacity. A single spot of iron was so rich, it'd take 10 chests to hold it all.

I gave up.

Really you never need storage, the idea is use it or dont mine it. You need some on you but feeding all the ore into the smelter then send it to builders then further upgrade line of the factorio is the idea, not storing any thing other than 1-2 stacks that if used can be rebuilt with resorces on hand. That will renew with the rest of the line set up.

I didnt get it at first but then noticed I needed nothing I had stored when I finaly had the build line made and had to feed all the stored Iron and copper plate back in, just to get rid of it. I keep one storage box for most items so I can get renewed but not more than that and i dont let it fill(clik the x and drag to a box you dont want filled in the crates).

While this is true, it is a nice feeling to have a few million (or even a few hundred thousand) iron and copper plates stored in a buffer system. These will keep your factory churning along while you set up a rail station to the next btach of ore.

Without storage, your factory will either grind to a halt or you will need to plan a bit further ahead to go get that next patch of ore before you need it. Obviously there is nothing wrong with either strategy.

Except I never seem to get the timing right on tacking the next ore patch. By the time I get around to it, my storage is half or more empty....

You don't need it - still i use storage, too.

If you do want to have a storage (Temporary or whatnot) just hook an inserter up to the full chest and have it drop goods into another chest one tile away; continue this as needed and you'll have chests upon chests full of stored goods. However, the idea remains that you should be using the ore you mine out there in the factory loops.

You don't *need* storage, no, but you also don't need logistics robots, faster conveyors, faster inserters, different modules, and a lot of other things that you can build. But they are helpful and allow for different play styles.

Passive storage works great.
Allows for a buffer that automatically gets fed to buildings needing the item when the buildings producing stop for whatever reason. Even if it's just because you want to reroute a conveyor or rearrange some stuff. Also helps by 'smoothing' the waves of stuff that come in via train.

How does that even work Oo

Then the lights are connected to the smart chest, and go on/off based on the random item being in the chest yes/no.

So for example, the leftmost 4 lights go on when a piece of pipe is in the smart chest.
The green inserter puts the item in the chest if amount > 500k. The other green inserter takes it out of the chest if amount < 500k.
Repeated 4 times for different (lower) values.

I wasn't aware ligths can turn on depending on if a smart chest has an item

Thats pretty cool... doest that work for all machines by the way? XD
Ah seems the wiki has a list, thanks

Couldn't you make the system a bit more compact with arithmetic combaintors and such?

Seems theres no way to control power yet though :<

Hmm why the inserter stuff? Like, what prevents you from just checking the amounts on the lights?

I use robots and logistic storage for "little used items" like pumpjacks, train engines, etc. These are made and stored somewhere off the beaten path that I don't really need to worry about.

I *think* I have every single item in the game (except rocket components) automatically produced and stored somewhere so that my factory can recover from even a big biter attack completely on its own.

Unless the biters get into the production/storage area. That would be bad. Very bad.
