Steam sync is slow, isn't it?
Does it take a few minutes for you guys to have Factorio sync up with Steam Cloud? I absolutely love Steam Cloud. My gaming is seamless with it. Play it on laptop, then at home, perfect.

Only concern is it takes a bit to sync. But at least it works. :)

UPDATE:
Spoke too soon. Seems like it won't sync at times.

I disabled it the second time it tried to and utterly failed to sync. Fortunately I only play on a single system.

Factorio saves can get quite big, so on a low speed connection I recommend to disable the Steam cloud feature. (Right click on the game --> Properties --> Updates --> uncheck Enable Steam Cloud synchronization...)

I did it on my install after Steam Cloud tried to upload 500 MB of savegames, on my 512kbit upload internet.

Anyway, if it takes some time to sync the culprit is Steam Cloud, not Factorio. (Factorio only tells Steam what to sync, Steam does the actual syncing.)

Ah. Makes sense.

Anyways, I'd like to keep Steam Cloud on so I could have seamless gameplay in both laptop and PC.

are there any plans to reduce savegame size as part of optimisations?
a way to turn off replay recording seems like a good start to a layman

The maps are so big because of the data it holds. You have tons of tiny grids where a single item (belt, inserter, etc) can be. Each grid itself can have... like, 16 smaller items within them (items on a betl), or can be a chest with items within THEM too.

Eventually the map just gets so big because you have so many items stored in so many possible places. I suppose they could further reduce size by compression or the likes, but that would probably increase load times.

I just realised Factorio was taking an age to upload to the cloud, and then realised it was uploading all of my old save files from before it came on steam!! I hope when i turn off steam cloud syncing that it deletes the saves from the cloud. Else i am going to be stuck with a crap ton of factorio saves in the Cloud!! Anyone know if it does?

The upload sync speed is painfully slow on Factorio saves for me, but only using the Linux client for Steam. It runs 45 KB/s once it starts to sync.

It only takes a few seconds to fully sync from my Windows 10 machine. I think there's some kind of bug or bandwidth cap in Linux that's causing it.

That's unfortunate but I don't think that the Factorio developers have the access to the Steam client source code needed to fix the Steam client. You might have better luck reporting this bug to Valve.

Correct, assuming you mean "in the Linux steam client" by "in Linux" because Linux obviously doesn't have any such bandwidth caps.
