This is true, however other things (Computer specs, network speed) might come in the way before you'll be able to reach such client amounts obviously.
All in all, with decent network speeds you should be able to play with all your friends. There is only limit of 65535 players.
However, the limit is 255 players at the same time, and 65.535 distinct players in the save as a whole.
I actually ran into this limit (it was 255 total players in the savegame then) and it was increased to 65.535 offline players with 0.12.28, but the online player limit is still 255.

Can't figure out how to word this for google, but I want to know how places that use '.' as the gap between thousands/hundreds/etc. deal with doing that, what do you use as a decimal point?
